I've been looking to get headphones that I can take travelling (on trains, etc.)
I currently have Sennheiser HD558's, how do these compare in sound? Also, are these sturdy enough to be squished into a backpack?
They're quite sturdy and come with a leather carrying bag. Really good sound isolation as they are closed headphones with leather padding. In terms of sound I've never used those so I wouldn't know.

the sound will be at the very least comparable if not better
m50s have good sound quality, its the go-to headphone pair for people who make music, some professionals use it too
also, i've brought my pair of m50s to and from school in my backpack for 2 years and they are still in good condition
I use these and my only complaint is the wear on the ear pads gets annoying, I've already replaced them once and I might have to buy another pair already. I've had them for almost 3 years.

i have these, and they sound great, however, i have normal size ears, and the outer part of my ear starts hurting if i wear it for too long, i guess you can put a bigger ear pad on it if thats the case
theyre cheap on amazon right now too
had mine for a year and a half, love them. i'm planning on replacing the pads though.

If you already have good headphones, why not get a pair of IEMs for on the go instead? They're much more portable and better at isolating noise.

I have some satisfactory IEMs already, they are actually what I generally use at my PC. However, they tend to give me earaches when I start using them a lot.
On the flipside though, I get really bad headphone hair that I need to shower to get rid of, so it's kind of lose/lose for me.
I bought these recently. Phenomenal pair of headphones. For their price, they have exceptional sound quality, and the manufacturer didn't skip on the build quality either. The only problem with them is that they do not have a microphone like a headset. However, I solved this by purchasing a ModMic and attaching it to the headphones.
