Someone gave me a Dota 2 key but I cant play the game. The play tab on the top is not letting me click on it, it has a shadow over it. What do I need to do to be able to play with the key that was given to me?

Someone gave me a Dota 2 key but I cant play the game. The play tab on the top is not letting me click on it, it has a shadow over it. What do I need to do to be able to play with the key that was given to me?
Did you already have the Dota2 Spec client downloaded before you got a dota2 key? Not exactly sure, but it could be launching that instead of the play client.
