Why does my hitsound not work?

I have put the hitsound.wav in tf>custom>mycustomfolder>sound>ui but it still doesn't work.
In console I have enabled tf_dingalingaling 1 but it still won't work. I even typed "play hitsound" into console, to that it says hitsound.wav file is missing from directory.

Help please?

is the directory from your steam username or from common?

This is the path
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\custom

But I know realize that the hitsound does actually but the volume for it is really low. The game won't let me change it above tf_dingalingaling_volume 1.0000

Any way to turn it up?

Boost the dB up in audacity

It could be a problem with the sound itself, for it to work it has to be 8bit encoding and mono only anything else does not count as a hitsound in tf2
