I don't know too much about sentencing here, but that does seem pretty harsh. I have a family member who committed grand larceny twice, and got no jail time. It probably depends on the state and how this was a federal offence, but usually the sentencing to the under raged is much less severe than if they were adults.
Edit: While the article is fake, pling still asked a valid question about american prison sentences, and I gave him my limited knowledge/experience there.
