Good first real gaming computer?

So, I recently got a job at a grocery store. Being my first job and at $8 an hour, I'm not about to complain. However, I've always played tf2 on Windows XP and Vista computers, and it was also used by my father. Now that I have the ability, I was wondering if anybody could suggest a reliable computer that's better than the shitty Laptop I have now.

Just get know what you buy, do some research, you'll be far more pleased buying something you really feel is perfect for your budget than some premade PC.
