valve used to do it with uppercase, and only changed it to lowercase after that patch where you had to move everything to the cfg/custom folder.

Anyone with capital letters is someone who is updating a hud from before that update, anyone with one after will probably have lowercase unless they have OCD and need it uppercase

Linux filesystems like ext4 are also case sensitive as well ( i dunno if macs are), so making it all lowercase makes it easy to not break things, I can remember having to rename mods to all lowercase letters for them to load on my mint system.
