Do you alt-tab a lot? Also check the volumes of the program.

if you alt tab to send messages itll ping, it wont if you use the overlay

I think if you are using 7, you just click th volume icon on the taskbar and go to mixer and put the steam volume for overlay up (if you use overlay)
