Making a new standard for HUD crosshair fonts!
Hey guys! So it's been a while since Fog released his crosshairs to use for different HUDs. In the interest of consolidating his list and many others I was looking for feedback on "essential" crosshairs. :)
Because I'd like this to be more than a combination of other people's projects, I am also looking to make new crosshairs. I have already experimented with editing and creating my own "letters" in a font to create a crosshair. This is what I made:
Show Content
It is a 2 part crosshair so I could customize both the wings and the circle, and while this is a complicated process I may be willing to do more 2 or more part crosshairs.
So here is what I'd like to see from those interested:
--Previously Existing HUD Crosshairs--
1. A screenshot of the crosshair. This is necessary for both previously existing crosshairs AND crosshairs that you want me to create. The higher resolution obviously the better, especially if you want it to be created from scratch.
2. Where the crosshair comes from if it already exists. I'd prefer you to just upload the font itself. The more fonts I have the merrier.
--Creating A New HUD Crosshair--
1. A screenshot of the crosshair. This is necessary for both previously existing crosshairs AND crosshairs that you want me to create. The higher resolution obviously the better, especially if you want it to be created from scratch.
2. Breakdown what you need. If you want the crosshair to be more than one part, explain what parts you want separated. Also, how do you want the parts to layer? This should be explained by the screenshot but if you think it's a bit complicated or if you want it changed up from the picture let me know!
I'll probably be adding most if not all essential crosshairs from other fonts but still, don't be afraid to make sure I don't miss one!
Thank you all in advance for helping me out :) and sorry in advance to all my friends that I bother about what crosshairs they want :D
THIS IS THE FIRST PRE-RELEASE!
This is just a preview so not all the crosshairs I want are here, but they are centered for 1920x1080
I think they will be centered on other resolutions, but I'm really not sure :/
The download can be found here :)
These are the crosshairs, with their associated character:

If you don't know how to install a font I'm sorry that I haven't made tutorials yet, and I will as soon as I can. Sadly I won't have time tonight and will be at college orientation for the next few days, but I promise that's a project I will do soon and probably this weekend.

You can use High-Logic FontCreator to convert background-less images to the font, the problem is that program is a commercial paid product, so well, you can buy it or crack it, your choice

I've always wondered if you could make a crosshair that is an outline of your primary, like the rocket launcher viewmodel but outlined. Just an idea.

I'm not quite sure what you're looking for but it can't be animated if that's what you were thinking

You should make your font file set up the same as whey's yahud crosshairs: they stay basically centered on any resolution/size. I'm not sure how he did it though, guess you could ask him.

Yeah! Actually I didn't know where it started but I am taking the concept from broeselhud. Basically it makes the install a bit more complicated, but all your crosshairs are centered :) I'm making a video tutorial for installing my font, but I need to finish the font itself first :P

How are you going to decide which crosshairs you include and which you exclude?

I'm going to include as many as possible, but I think it will be mostly determined by demand

Feel free to add me on steam and I'll upload the font for you, and teach you how to install it if need be

I'm not sure what the smoothing issue is, but if a crosshair feels uneven, try a couple differnet sizes to make sure the game isn't just rounding the pixels and making it look uneven

default crosshairs, by that i mean the crosshair that appears when you select "none" in options. For some reason other crosshairs like the + are nice and bold, but the "none" crosshairs are not very opaque and i find them hard to see.

Something cool, only if you felt like it, would be to create a separate font file with outlines for all your crosshairs, scaled the same. So, in other words, one font file with the regular crosshairs, then another with an outline for that same crosshair. That way people who want an outlined crosshair don't need to rely on the pixelated tf2 font outlines. This would be cool specifically for the more basic crosshairs, the cross and the dot and stuff.

I ran some limited testing but I'm fairly certain I can use at least 82 different characters. So there will be plenty of room to personalize your crosshair! :D

I have a few crosshair fonts hanging around that'd probably be good for reference.

Might be what Geknaiir's talking about, but they aren't all centered the same way. Nothing major if you're only using one crosshair and the label's centered, but using more than one at once (minor but noticeable difference) or having the label be oriented east/west (closecaptions mostly, major difference) it becomes pretty obvious.
Not really worth a whole new font over (though I'm pretty sure that's what crosshairs3.ttf is in my little collection), but if you're making one then be sure you're centering them the same from the get go.

I think I'll be able to do this. It will require a separate character but I'll do it if I have the space. I have a theory that if right I'll be able to use ~130 different characters

Starter of the crosshairs. I plan on adding an outline for most if not all, and will probably have them correspond (lower case a for the cross, captial A for the outline of the cross etc.)
Still looking for ideas! Also looking for a font that includes the seeker's crosshair and people to give me fun ones to make :D
I will also spend time to make sure each crosshair is centered in the font

Looks like you're approaching this pretty ambitiously: if that's the case then it would be cool if someone finally made a version of konr wings that's stretched for 16:9 as the original is for the way the 'none' crosshair looks on 4:3. It also would be cool to have the 'none' crosshair wings from both aspect ratios as the 4:3 one looks much better imo.

You can make hitmakers, if needed. It's will be cool.
You also can add spread with tf_use_fixedweaponspreads 1.
I mean something like this:
