So I have been testing a few commands lately for tf2 and found that cl_blobbyshadows 1 gave me an extra 15 fps at all times, if people could confirm this or not please tell me :)
Not entirely sure how a fps increase can be placebo?
Run it via timedemo to be sure. http://www.teamfortress.tv/thread/7598/tf2-benchmarks

Well I dont know if it was just something happening on my pc or not, thats why I didnt want to say it was a definite or not.
Just a tad bit of help (example from post you added) could you tell me what each number does in this? 2639 frames 15.886 seconds 166.12 fps ( 6.02 ms/f) 7.576 fps variability
Test twice, with and without the command. The only important thing is the fps number, compare that from each tes.
also im sure checking your fps while you have the command on and then off would confirm whether you get a boost or not
Your fps fluctuates during regular play all the time, without testing variables as well.
placebo is a commonly used word around here nowadays
i play in dx8 with shadows disabled
cl_blobbyshadows 0
2639 frames 16.430 seconds 160.62 fps ( 6.23 ms/f) 8.725 fps variability
cl_blobbyshadows 1
2639 frames 16.824 seconds 156.86 fps ( 6.38 ms/f) 8.900 fps variability
so anyone who doesn't use shadows, ignore this completely

Why would this be a placebo?
Basically (assuming you have shadows enabled) cl_blobbyshadows 0 renders all player models, weapons, gibs, and health/ammo packs a second time. cl_blobbyshadows 1 does not.

It definitely does something for anyone who has shadows enabled.

I only said placebo because I didnt know if it was just me doing something else or if it was that command but it seems to help a lot when using shadows.

starliwhy would you use shadows in the first place
Because there legal wall-hacks. Which you wont get with this command it doesn't seem. So if you have shadows on for the wall hackyness then don't use this command

if you had decent gamesense and decent hearing skills you wouldn't need to use it lol.

Whatever you say man but there's no reason not to use them. Just like there's no reason to talk shit to someone you don't know.

lmao my point was to point out that sacrificing fps for shadows that don't help much is a dumb choice imo.

If you have more then enough frames especially when shadows are more of an overall performance effect rather then stability. Seeing through that wall when defending snakewater last knowing the medic is standing in the center wall instead of the chokes is pretty handy info.
Can't begin to count multiple other instances regardless of format.
Don't see how having an almost free advantage at the exchange of a few frames is worth scoffing at.

SnowshoePinKushinFYI blobby shadows aren't the one with wallhacks. only the dynamic shadows. You're wasting your time and fps keeping blobby shadows on.starliwhy would you use shadows in the first placeBecause there legal wall-hacks. Which you wont get with this command it doesn't seem. So... there is no reason to use cl_blobbyshadows 1 (or mat_rendertotexture 0, which also makes the blobby shadows). Just use r_shadows 0 and save your fps.
If you want to use shadows for wallhacks then DONT use blobby shadows, simple enough
"Which you wont get with this command it doesn't seem." is me saying that blobby shadows wont show through walls.
