Real talk though, I have no problem with the rule change. Essentially teams would score a TD, kick the PAT, and then get the ball, 4th and 15 on their own 30. They can then punt (simulates the kickoff without all the pesky head injuries) or go for it (simulates the onside kick, which has almost exactly the same success rate as going for it on 4th and 15.

The only issue I'd have with it is that teams with elite receivers could probably get the ball back pretty often by just throwing a jump ball.

Overall the rule change makes the game more exciting, which it sorely needs.

I don't think the game sorely needs anything. It's the most popular sport in the US. It continues to thrive even with our economy being in the shitter.

I dunno, to me it seems like Roger Goodell is starting to go drunk with power.

It's the most well marketed sport in the US. Compared to faster-moving sports like basketball it's really boring to watch. I have no interest in watching a play, then watching it replayed 3 more times while they set up for the next one. I realize that's maybe an unpopular opinion, but basketball, hockey, and soccer are far more interesting on a strategic level because decision-making happens in real time.

I'm sorry, but basketball may be the most boring sport to watch in the history of sports.

Edit: I still enjoy college hoops, but the NBA is just so bad.

The options are either to go for it and try to retain possession or punt. If you go for it and fall short, of course, the opposing team would take over with good field position. In essence, a punt replaces the kickoffs.

Maybe it's because im canadian and our football league is shit but rugby in my opinion is a better, more fast paced sport.

Football and baseball are both shit "sports." If you have to stop to take a breather every 5 seconds you're playing a game, not a sport.

Football is 20 minutes of actual gameplay. I don't watch a game anymore without my smartphone in hand to do something during the commercial breaks. Kind of ridiculous to have a commercial break after a team scores and another one right after the kickoff.

I think kickoffs are fine. Being able to take knees with 2 mins left in the game is a bigger problem in football.

99% of the time a qb chooses who he throws to on the fly. Quarterbacks make audibles to counter certain formations and an rb chooses where to run/cut on the fly. Soccer is slow paced and basketball is repetitive. Hockey is good though.

If you've ever played a strategy game (real-time and/or turn-based) in your life and can't appreciate the NFL then there's got to be something strange going on. It's an elaborate chess match. Once you view it as so, let alone all the other excitement that comes with the sport it's a phenomenal experience.

I think playing football in high school helps me a bit (I got to personally experience this instead of just believing some guy saying it), but just because a certain play is called too, means nothing. The biggest plays to ever happen where because a quarterback make an audible, a receiver ran the 'hot route' instead, a defender tripped, just so may variables into every play before it even happens and during it. The strategy level is through the roof.

I'm a Steelers fan, the AFC North is what's *important* to me yet I'll watch a Dallas/Washington MNF game just to see the match ups, just to appreciate how the coaches call the game and also to see some amazing individual talent. There is so much thought that goes into every single play it's incredible.

The NFL truly needs nothing, it and hockey will be the 1-2 punch of proper sports (at least in my book) for ages to come.

I dont really like that (potential) rule change, but I cant put my finger on why.

I hear it was greg shiano (bucs coach) who actually asked goodell about it.

I think its mostly being considered because its a player safety type of thing. Lots of times in kickoffs, you get 2 players running full speed and crashing into each other and getting hurt. That happens less with punts because the punters put more emphasis on hangtime in order to eliminate a big return.

But its well known that goodell doesnt care about player safety. he cares about making money. This is why thursday night football exists. If he actually cared, then he would either eliminate thursday night football, or make it so that you can only play thursday if you are coming off a bye week.
