Are you ready to ruuuumble?
EVL is proud to bring you the 4th Battle Royale! For 2015 we have something special in store for the Team Fortress 2 community: a two day highlander tournament! Prestige! Prizes! Competition!
There will be two divisions to play in:
Cardboard division costs a key to enter and is open to players Silver and lower. You can solo queue as your preferred classes, and you will be matched with a team based on our ranking system, which takes data from logs.tf and other databases.
Professional division is for players who have their own team to compete with. There's no skill cap and no restrictions on team management. The fee to register as Professional starts at $37.99 for a team of 10 players (that's 9 players and 1 backup!) with additional roster slots available for $5 apiece. Registration fees cover the tournament prize pool and other expenses.
"Wait though," you say. "Didn't you mention PRIZES?"
We did indeed! The winning team of the Professional bracket will get a $20 Steam gift card and $35 Amazon gift card for each member of their team (up to the first 11 paid players.) Of course there may be more sweet loot in the mix, but that's a surprise!
The winning team of the Cardboard bracket will get a whole hunk of keys for each player on their team and potentially some other cool stuff as well.
The Professional bracket will play August 22 and 23, and the Cardboard bracket will play September 5 and 6. Both tournaments will start at 10 am PST (1 pm EST) on their respective days.
Still having second thoughts? Lay em to rest.
We have a new website, lovingly developed by the Battle Royale team and Cherry of Saloon.tf
Your matches and servers during the tournament will be managed automatically by the website.
All of your stats will be grabbed and the scores will be reported automatically.
And of course, all of our servers have full DDOS protection and are centrally located in Chicago and Dallas.
BUT WAIT IT KEEPS GETTING BETTER!
Not only can you play, but you can also wager your sweet sweet items on saloon.tf in hopes of making some serious dosh in the semi-finals and finals (you just can't bet on your own matchups). And of course you might just end up on camera; there will be coverage of the event, for both Professional and Cardboard, casted on evlTV!
Registration begins shortly at evlbr.com, and we hope to see you in this year's Battle Royale!

I'd consider playing, but I'm probably out of town both those weekends (Then again, I'm a cardboard pleb, so I might be around).

tetrominowill there be badges?
Probably not. We did chat with a few medal designers, and they quoted us around $700 for a single participation medal (I know its a ton of work but this seemed high). Instead we decided to spend that money on prizes since our budget is very minuscule as it is.
I think its a good tradeoff :)

Why use Gift Cards as prizes? I don't know anyone who would rather have two gift cards instead of the money in paypal. Also, the way you have it now if you get less than 14 teams you're in the red, but if you get more what do you do with the extra money?

Paying out money is tricky, and in some states is considered gambling, regardless of whether or not there is a dynamic prize pool, or a static pool.
The prizes are not our only expense. Datacenter colocation, website development, promotional stuff (SFM promo's aint free!), etc. If we have extra funds (which hasn't happened for the past 3 events), we'll use it to pay some of our graphic designers who signed up to go unpaid but have put in countless hours of work. After that, any spare money will be used to cover expenses for our next event.
I've already personally put up about $400 and don't expect to see it come back. This is no money making scheme, but its not a charity either and has to bring in some revenue to cover costs. My goal for Battle Royale is to make the organization financially independent.

I was more saying if you just pay cash you're assured that you won't pay out more than you bring in

That's true, and we may do it that way for future events, but for this event the gift cards work best. This is our first paid event, so we have to take things slow.

We have received a lot of feedback on our reddit post stating that people would prefer a cheaper entry fee (for the professional division) with fewer prizes.
Current Fee/Prizes:
$3.79 per player ($37.99 per team) Each member of winning team gets $20 steam card + $35 amazon card
Proposed Fee/Prizes
$1.50 per player ($15 per team) Each member of winning team gets $20 steam card (no amazon card)
