I know most people dislike penciljumping (including myself;I personally hate it), but despite it being used mostly by newbie players who don't hold crouch, is it actually better or worse than regular hold-crouch rocket jumping? What are the pros and cons of both, technically speaking?
whats pencil jumping i googled it and got nothing!!
You know there's a difference between penciljumping and jumping without crouching right?
when you dont hold crouch in the air, the solly's leg animation is different and sometimes they go straight down and not move like a pencil. this happens when you ctap because you tap crouch and not hold it down.
+can be unpredictable
+can tilt the enemy
-harder to strafe
-less height / distance
-makes u look like a retard(?)
Actually jumping and having good jumps is a direct upgrade unless u want to bm the enemy team

if you jump and your legs are wobbly or "pencil form" you look retarded
Nvm, my bad. Confused penciljumping with non-crouch jumping. This is what I meant:

Yeah I still have no idea what you're talking about

add Paul, he is the king of pencildiving, he would love to discuss this with you.

non-crouch = less knockback, apparently useful when bombing meds so you don't get sent flying by airshots but no one ever does it
crouch = smaller hitbox
doesnt effect air movement at all

SO THATS WHAT IT IS??? All this time I thought it was just the way scout mains jumped when playing solly because it looks so retarded

I always thought pencil jumping was when you do a really shit jump with very little forward momentum and no strafing.

This is exactly it. At least from first hand experience.

That is what pencil jumping is yes

crouching in midair in tf2 doesnt affect airstrafing at all
I get so salty about it because I cant hit people who do it ;_;
I think 'penciljumping' is one of the latest tf2 memes? The first person I ever heard say it is ams and he's a certified r*****d.
You should ask Buttnose, he is the king of penciljumping.
Can confirm that playing against a pencil jumper can put you on tilt...
yall need to talk to thrasher, the real king of the pencil jump
I have a pretty decent theory as to why penciljumpers are usually scout/non-soldier mains.
To my knowledge, penciljumping is when somebody doesn't hold crouch midair while they rocket/sticky jump. When you learn a basic rocket jump, you tap crouch, space, and mouse1 at the same time, and since there's no reason to hold them you just let go of them instinctively, so that its all one timing and you click all of them at the same time.
Most soldier mains I've been friends with have also gotten into rocket jumping at one point or another, and its common knowledge that in order to effectively gain momentum from pogos/wall jumps, you have to hold crouch. After a lot of rocket jumping, you start instinctively doing it.
When competitive non-soldier players try out soldier, legit rocket jumping on jump maps is honestly one of the most useless things to learn, and they focus on airshots, aerials, ctapping, etc, and they end up not holding crouch because it generally doesn't help you competitively.
Also, to the person that said it happens when you ctap, I and about 90% of the ctappers I know press crouch after the initial ctap jump, and don't pencil jump, so I kind of think thats an invalid point.

you take a lot less knockback when youre not holding crouch so it's really situational when you press it
ive honestly never seen a player that is good at rocket jumping ever do a pencil jump. it seems to only occur when someone rj's with very poor timing of crouch+jump.

I just tried it in thirdperson. I was able to get about the same height as a normal rocket jump, and I could pencil jump when I didn't hold crouch.
I did however find it way easier to get a legit pencil jump with ctap...

One of my friends penciljumps and it is very hard to airshot. I dont think pencilumping and jump mapping is mutually exclusive because he is better than most at jump maps.
