The lft threads and the lfp threads on tf.tv are mainly geared towards experienced ESEA players.
It's considered taboo to run full time Pyro, so your friend should either learn how to play demo, scout, or soldier. If he doesn't want to do that, play highlander. Anyways, here is the UGC Iron LFT thread, its for players new to comp. Also here is some resources for new comp players, I suggest learning map callouts as well.

you dont have to start in ugc, it's called open for a reason
though most people end up playing in ugc prior to open, that's not to say we as a community should discourage new players from trying esea
