Depends on what type of game you're looking for. Magicka can be a fun 4 player co-op game. If you're really into old RPG's it's super fun to make a party in Neverwinter Nights (2) or Baldur's Gate (2) and all play together in mumble.
I can't think of many fun co-op FPS games off the top of my head as far as co-op campaign goes.

it has coop (2 people playing together) and a 2v2 multiplayer
i had a lot of fun playing it (and i would love to play it again but i have no friends to play with because they are all gays)

synergy, obsidian conflict...I'm sure there's other hl2 mods that are coop.
If you have a console, rainbow six splitscreen is fun.

Terraria is pretty fun online, use hamachi to play with your friends. Nice thing is it allows at least eight players, I'm not sure what the ceiling is. Also saints row three has been good in coop, only two players in that though. I think it's on sale pretty cheap on steam, unless it expired already.

L4D2 is on sale for 10 bucks right now and I see you already own it so that might be good. It will probably go on sale for even less in a daily/flash deal later at some point during the event if you can wait.

^ been playing since 2006 and still play it with a couple of friends, best coop/hl1 mod game ever, you just require half life 1 if you want to try it. They just released 4.7 today as well.

magicka - 1-4 player rpg adventure game with a really cool, unique spell system. you can mix and match different elements to conjure a plethora of spell(and accidentally kill your friends), it's real dynamic. game is pretty funny too. note: game is known too be buggy at times but it's not a big deal. most of the dlc is a joke and the campaign dlc, the stars are left, was a buggy piece of shit when i played. but if you want to try it anyways only 1 person needs to have the dlc for the rest to play.
trine 2 - 1-3 player side scrolling puzzle game. each player controls 1 of 3 characters with their own set of skills and you have to work together to progress.
laura croft and the guardian of light - 1-2 player co op puzzle game/top down shooter. btw, dont change weapons with scroll wheel, it will bug out your game and you'll have to rehost.
saints row: the third - i'm not sure how many players can play together, but i've played this with one other person and it was great. pretty much over the top GTA.
alien swarm - this game is great, i think a lot of people blow it off just because it's free but it's easily one of my favorites games. its a 2-4 player survival game. this game gets difficult on max difficulty so you'll actually need to comm and work together, which is cool.

Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 is only 2.50 on steam and its pretty fun. I recommend synergy, magicka, borderlands, terraria, trine 2, l4d, portal 2.
