So, I just built a computer after I got tired of playing on my terrible HP computer and I am concerned about the fps I get in TF2. My computer is comprised of an Intel i5-3750K, a GTX 660ti, 8Gb of RAM, an after market CPU cooler, an SSD and HDD and the ASRock Z77 Extreme4 motherboard. I am also running Chris' max frames config, with dxlevel set to 81. I was playing in a 24 man server that wasn't even full and my frames were dropping to 90 regularly, I had the cap set at 132. With my specs is this the sort of performance that is typical? If not, what can I do to try and fix it?
tf2 is just like that, also if u play at max settings your fps will also be at 90-132
When you think TF2 fps, think CPU. It's so intensive on CPU. With that said I do not think you should be getting that low of frames. Is TF2 on your SSD or your HDD?
24 man pubs can hurt my FPS pretty bad. If your processor is still at stock speeds that might be reasonable FPS on a pub.
Yes i have the same thing happen its not too big a deal unless you have a 120hz, in that case pubbing is just going to be like that
try the dx9 cfg. I actually get better performance with that
It really is sad how much Valve have completely fucked the performance of TF2 over the course of its lifecycle.
brb needing a completely new and updated rig to play TF2 now than when the game first came out

alright, the frames i get when using the dx9 config are more stable. i am still annoyed about this, though. i don't like how the dx9 graphics look. anyway, thanks disengage and everyone else who helped.
I had to overclock my cpu by over 1GHz and get a second graphics card to max tf2. Just get a config.

I have an FX-8120 at 3.9Ghz, and get a stable 200 FPS in 6s matches. Your processor is far superior to mine, so if you overclock (which I expect you can hit at least 4.2, depending on your cooler), you should have no problems with FPS.

i got about the same fps as reilly with an i5 3330 @ stock clockspeed (3.0) i can dip to 110 fps with a dx9 config with a full 24 player server, and in 6s with dx9 config i get about 180 fps
alright, thanks for the advice. i am going to overclock my cpu to 4.0ghz
wait a sec i thought dx9 gave higher quality graphics, anyone care explaining why one would get more frames with dx9 than dx8

This is purely conjecture, but I think it's because the dx8 is purely relying on your CPU to run the game, while the dx9, which requires a pretty decent GPU, is sharing the work load between the CPU and the GPU.

tf2 isnt cpu intensive, sure maybe 5 years ago it was but if you have any sort of decent, modern cpu tf2 is absolutely no problem for it, so im not sure why people keep saying that tf2 is *SO* cpu intensive.
