Need help getting a new CPU

My current GPU isn't a problem because I run chris' fps config but I want to upgrade from my dual core 2.7Ghz CPU as I am getting low fps, 150-250 fps when nothing is happening, can get to 20 fps on a 32 mann server and down to 40 fps in 6v6 matches. I can't find benchmarks for tf2 anywhere but I was thinking of getting an i3 or an i5. I was wondering if you fine folks could tell me what CPU you own and what is your average fps along with maybe your min fps? I know this isn't related to streaming but I'm sort of desperate, nobody will help me, thanks, and any help at all will help!

Just get a 3570k, you wont regret it. You will have to get a new motherboard aswell.

Yes, I know. I've already got that planned. I read that a 3570K will be too much for tf2, any ideas on how much fps it is?

Easily 250+, if you video card isnt a complete pile of trash, you will be good. Also if you had to use the Intel HD graphics you could probably get stable fps above 100. But you have a GPU so your good.

Not sure, could I save a bit of money and go with something a little lower :\
Or I guess I should stay safe and get that, alright, thanks for the help!

Check if you have a microcenter near you. They sell 3570k's for $170 in-store.

TwitchTVJohnDon't listen to the folks telling you to upgrade to a 3570k.TwitchTVJohnI'd recommend getting yourself at least an i5 3570k and grabbing yourself one of the $119 gigabyte motherboards for socket 1155.

What

Just realized the other guy mentioned a motherboard. Derp.
I read through quickly and thought he was just told to get a new CPU. MUH BAD.

Maybe this review can help:

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/53054-intel-i7-3770k-ivy-bridge-cpu-review-19.html

A little out dated but it help to compare CPUs in TF2.
The GPU is a GTX 460.

Unfortunately a 460 is not enough for TF2 anymore.

That's not true, I get over 120 frames in action on any map, running 2 monitors, with one at 120hz. And my cpu is a 1156 i5, and a gtx 460 gpu.

Either a complete lie or a massive troll or you don't know what you're talking about, a 460 is more than enough for TF2. If anything it's a "little" (re: LITTLE) overkill (if it were JUST for TF2). The game is 99% cpu usage and 1% gpu usage (hyperbole). If you were to get a gtx680 for example, you would probably get 5 frames. cpu overclocks are nearly 1:1 in terms of fps:mhz afaik. Probably more exaggeration, but it shows how much more cpu intensive TF2 is compared to other "modern" games, where GPU is more the driving factor.

120fps isn't good enough for 120Hz. I have an i7 2600k and the GTX 460, same monitor set up as you. When the frame rate is 200+ it is truly smooth as butter, but once it starts dipping under 200 you can definitely feel that it isn't as smooth. This is similar to how 100fps feels smoother than 60fps on 60Hz.

lol retard pls go
