THE COMPETITION
Take home gold
Launched as part of the London Games Festival, on April 6th 2016, the eGames is an international gaming tournament where national pride is the prize.
Supported by the UK Government, this not for profit initiative, has been set up with the aim of positively shaping the future of competitive gaming.
In line with other globally established sporting events, the eGames will be a medal only competition, with the opportunity to take home the gold.
THE IEGC
Governance.
Inclusivity.
Diversity.
The International eGames Committee (IEGC) will set up an International Advisory Board to assist in running the eGames and assist it with: instilling good governance, responsible gaming and ensuring the competition is inclusive and diverse.
The IEGC will set up Advisory Boards in each country who in turn will oversee their country's Association and eTeam. i.e. British eGames Association and eTeam Britain.
The IEGC will donate to specific gaming charities.
RIO 2016
The first competition
The first planned event is a two-day pop up in Rio during the Olympics to showcase the eGames to the world of competitive gaming and attract further partners.
Each country will have a squad (eTeam) of gamers (male and female - over 18) playing in team and individual games.
Participants will compete for medals: Gold (1st Place), Silver (2nd Place) and Bronze (3rd Place).
More detailed information will be announced in April and May.
THE eTEAMS
Take the stage
Each country will have the opportunity to enter their eTeam. Currently eTeam Britain, eTeam Canada, eTeam Brazil and eTeam USA are already on board.

So this is just like Nations Cup, but in a LAN setting?
While playing videojuegos for "national pride" and a medals can be a good thing, no one will want to pay for all of the travel expenses out of their pockets.
Guess we'll have to wait for further details on how it will be organized and stuff

This seems like madness unless there are either huge advertising opportunities and orgs are interested, or there are financial reasons to play as well. It's like one of those tournaments from 2000.

It's really strange tho that with esports blowing up recently there hasnt been an international organization dedicated to do some Olympic games / world cup kind of thing with the various competitive games.
I assume in like 10-15 years esports will be so much more prevalent and nation competitions will be a normal affair just like in every other sport.

Probably because there would be a huge financial incentive for companies to get their games in the show, and being able to call your game an "Olympic eSport".

Olympic champions are awarded money by the olympic federation of their home country, not from the international olympic committee. I'm not sure that would translate to esports very well, but potentially sponsors could send teams with a win bonus if they place? Depends on how big this gets if sponsors want to lay down the dollars.
I don't think that esports really lend themselves to the olympic model, I think if the UK wants to encourage esports they should look at trying to get more big tournaments and eventually a major to their own country.

Really encouraging, good that they're starting now imo, even if it's small, rather than waiting another year or two to organise a slightly larger one with probably less publicity and interest.

ensuring the competition is inclusive and diverse.
I don't know why but this sentence bugs me.

Sponsors have not been announced yet as a majority of this is under embargo.
But I know from an inside source that there is a "huge" waiting list of sponsors.
Watch this space, so to say.
