I'm half Slovak and would love to learn that, but there are no good materials for learning it or Czech by yourself, so Polish is the logical next choice for me.

They're pretty similar indeed, I'd say Slovak is even more similar to Polish than Czech is. When I was in Slovakia in December ski rental guy actually said he'd prefer if I speak Polish instead of English :P Second day I didn't even bother to speak English
