I've never been to a LAN before and recently I've been kinda interested in attending an insomnia LAN.
How much does an event like this (for someone living in the UK), actually cost after all is done, food, tickets, accommodation and all?
Are there smaller, cheap LANs that "freshers" like myself are advised to start with?

If you're attending a lan that requires you to fly and get a hotel expect to have a budget ready of about $1300 USD
Driving should bring that number down a bit.
There are plenty of smaller lans in the community but most of your cost is in Airline/Hotel/Food more than anything else, regardless of the size of the actual lan.

Both these arent accounting for the fact you live in the UK. So you dont need to plane it.
For me it cost about £350 total. I took a train so. And the majority of this went to drinking and food.
Also I didnt play so if you want a BYOC ticket expect +£80
Edit: Also worth noting I camped so sleeping arrangements only cost me £10

100 for ticket + EAS
250-300 for hotel
120 for food, drinks and booze (it might be more or less depending how much alcohol you gonna drink)

You split a hotel. All of the lans I've attended I've paid for the room myself entirely and would spend 2-3 days there.
GXL 2015 and FLan 2015 trips both cost me about the same, buutttt I did rent a car to drive to Orlando to FLan so that didn't help.

i ended up getting my gxl plane ticket less than a week before the event and had to pay $200 for an extension on the return flight because i fucked it up so my total cost was around $1300 -_-

Even if you think Miggy's budget is a bit pricey, it's generally better to budget a bit more money than you'll actually spend in case you have an unforeseen cost, and they do happen.

I should also mention that I live in the dick tip of Florida so traveling anywhere from here sucks.
Whoops

True^ I literally got home with 2p because I got a taxi on a bank holiday to the train station which cost twice as much...

Is there a beginner's guide to PC LANs? I assumed the whole point of a LAN was to bring your own gear, but if a ticket for that is extra, then what do you do without the extra?

It's the same for Canadians, and add to that the low Canadian dollar doesn't help.

i was looking at prices to go:
£100 for ticket & EAS
'bout £150 for a 3 night hotel we were looking at
travel prices vary obviously, train tickets cost £50 return last time i went to birmingham from here but i booked that last minute
Food and alcohol and shit costs however much you wanna spend on it i guess
Unexpected stuff you might have to pay for: taxi to/from train station (cause heavy gamer gear), kensington lock

Idk about you, but I like to hit up as many strip joints while out of town so I like to budget for that.

I seem to be getting ~£300 figures (not including travel) for playing video games away from home. Basically the cost I'd expect from a single-person weekend holiday. Thanks, that tells me what sort of budget I need in life (a bigger one than I have right now) before I can start considering this stuff.
Edit: Unless like there's like smaller/local 2-day events that would come to like £100 (not including travel).
