Not necessarily sure if this is what Valve has been planning. Thought I would share though.
* ignore the asterisk, never mind.

It's apparently a different thing than the "steambox", but I'm not 100% sure and can't dig up a reference right now.
it looks cool but the price point is insane. 999$ bucks is a big investment for a portable PC really when you can easily make a great desktop or even get a decent laptop.
Being able to upgrade it and swap parts is pretty cool, but my entire gaming PC cost less than that tiny little box. Doesn't make much sense.
how do you fit an i7, 4 sticks of ram, 2 GTX 680's, a sound card and a motherboard in that little box????
is it like a chromebook for steam? that would be horrible for 1k.
You know there's a 99% chance Valve will be selling it at a loss, so that $999 price point is pretty much moot.
Where are people getting the $999 from?
LOOKS COOL EITHER WAY

The X7A starts at $999, so Valve will likely want to reduce the RRP in line with its own specifications. The entry-level X5A, which uses Linux, starts at $499.

i don't really know why i would buy this over a gaming pc, that i can build myself for less than $999.

the good better best idea intrigues me
In order to compete in this console market valve has to start commercializing the fuck outta this. It can work though, the fact that steam supports console controllers I can see a lot of xbox and ps triple fans making the switch.
cheap games+ fanboy controller= profit
