I don't think that's at all an unpopular opinion: if you wanted a ballooning scene filled with clueless redditors, you can always play Overwatch. All anyone really wants out of the TF2 dev team is optimization/ cleanup, the game's been near perfect (balance wise) since release.

tf2 is gonna die sooner or later, and that is ok, because by the time it happens, most of us will have moved on to different games or have actual jobs & be preoccupied elsewhere.
ive personally seen it happen to l4d2, which had a quite vivid competitive scene, albeit much smaller and less organized than tf2. nevertheless, you are still going to find people playing the game in a competitive environment to this day, even at 3am in the morning.

instead of worrying about the game dying or growing the competitive community, how about we just enjoy what we have while we have it?

i think it's too late to save tf2 as the majority of its playerbase only fuck around in pubs and spend their time buying hats/taunts

it's a shame really, this game has the potential to be a fantastic esport and personally it's the best fps i've ever played, the classes, the mechanics and all the raw gameplay features are unique and can't be found in any other game, i think the only chance we get an esport out of the team fortress brand is if valve started working on tf3 on source2, and focus on the raw gameplay instead of other stupid shit
