Because of other reasons I am forced to use a macbook. Its not that bad, with me able to get 60fps in pubs consistently and reaching up to 100 if I run nothing in the background, however the moment I play something in chrome my frames drop to ~40. Does anyone know how I can reduce the impact that chrome has on my framerate when something is playing in the background?
Use a different browser; chrome eats a lot of memory resources. If you're running on integrated graphics this will especially harm you as there is no dedicated video buffer so all of the game textures/models are also having to be loaded into system memory.
you can also try making sure that whatever is playing is using html5 video, I've found that helps my frames a lot if I have something playing on my other monitor

I had a discussion with Jill from the TF2 team about this. The two things he suggested were 1. Run the game in Fullscreen if you have other shit open in the background. It has the effect of giving TF2 preference in some way? I forget the exact details. Your browser having focus on a second screen can be an issue, not sure if that applies to you or not but it did for me. He also used to work at Mozilla, and gave me the advice about Firefox since that's what I use.. in Firefox go about:config and find layers.acceleration.disabled. Toggle it to true. You'll have to restart Firefox. It will have the effect of making Firefox a bit slower and etc until you re-toggle it, but it should help your game a lot. I used to go back and forth but just keep it disabled now and I don't mind.
