Why is this such a hot topic? It's completely optional, if you don't think the extra features are worth the $9 a month then don't get it. It's not like they're making it where not having Turbo is going to hinder your stream watching experience.
I'd be down for this if I could watch streams. I have 30dl/5ul and all streams (regardless of quality) are laggy. Shit don't make no sense.

Time Warner Cable in Hawaii. I called them and they claim they don't throttle my net to twitch.

Heh, Hawaii. That would explain a lot. Lemme look into this for you. Do me a favor - open your cmd and run tracert live.justin.tv - email me the results. jeh@twitch.tv
TwitchTVJohnTurbo users count as an ad impression for partnered broadcasters. Having turbo users also leaves more ad inventory available for streamers. This means ad inventory/fill rates stay higher, and streamers make more money.
When you factor in the fact that a lot of regions have an advertising market that is still in it's infancy, this helps significantly for broadcasters with heavy viewership in those regions.
Those that think adblock is the bee's knees: it's very easy for a company to get rid of it entirely. We choose to allow users to have whatever experience they want. That's how we look at it. It's your choice, not ours. We're here to build a platform that allows people to succeed and grow their brand doing something they love.
PS: if you're a turbo user and subscribed to teamfortresstv on Twitch, you can use the emotes sitewide.

where do you live on the island to get 30dl/5up??
i was trying to pay something like $140/month for 100dl/10up but apparently they don't offer their advertised speeds in my area so the max i could possibly get is 50dl/2up at the same price
lol

Do you use the android or the iOS app? I know the android app is pretty bare bones, but the iphone/ipad apps work well for some users, and terrible for others.

android, i use hdmi out in my room and it can be way better.
djcthe $4.99 sub gets split down the middle, half to twitch half to the streamer
iirc it's $0.02 cents per ad view and you get paid out @ $100
i'm pretty damn sure it's not $0.02 viewer per ad view as that is way too high.
[edit] did some research
http://support.twitch.tv/discussion/1441/how-much-does-twitch-pay-out
$5/1000 views per hour = $10 / 2000 views per hour.
so if you're getting 2,000 viewers you're making $10/hour which is around minimum wage.
$10/2000 views = half a cent per viewer per hour ($0.005) and your calculation is four times that.

Question to John:
Why is the subscriber function limited to "Top Partners" (as explained here: http://www.twitch.tv/p/partners) instead of being available for everyone. Is there some downside that twitch has to incur for providing it?
I would 100% subscribe to teamfortresstv and a few other channels that I watch a lot, and I am sure that many others would as well. Even though the tf2 community is not the greatest in size, I think we might be in terms of dedication! :)
EDIT: Going turbo right now! :D

Yes. We look for 500-750 average concurrents as well as 5-6 million viewer minutes per month. I bypassed these for teamfortresstv as I know the community has the passion to support it, and it helps cover costs for hosting of the site/paying casters/buying 4 weeds etc.
It has a significant cost in terms of accounting and management. That's why they aren't given to anyone and everyone.

Ok. That makes sense, thanks!
PS: Very cool having you around to be really supportive of the tf2 community (and answering questions).
EDIT: Also, IDK if this is just my ISP or paypal, but when I selected pay by paypal it took at least 60 seconds to load the paypal window.

I don't know how much of it is true or not, just got done listening to it all though.
I'd like to know what TotalBiscuit thinks of it though.

TB talked about it today.
As for those with subscriptions - The number of subscriptions to invididual channels went up significantly after the announcement of Turbo (which is something we did expect.)
