In my oppinion, you should try this first before buying Quake Live.

QL costs money now? Last time I played it it was for free :O
Anyways, quake in my opinion is one of the greatest FPS games of all times and you should definitely give it a go.
You'll still find players to play against. The game has a relatively small but very dedicated player base.
That being said, if you do decide to buy it, be prepared to get rekt hard.
The game has a insanely high skill ceiling and there are a lot of players who have been playing the game exclusively for like 10 years.
The game is old and there are not a lot of new players in it, so the average skill level is very high and you can't expect to do ok in pubs after a couple of days like in other games.

You won't be okay at it for a long time, but it's exhilarating and fun and any success you do have feels very very very rewarding.

Yup. I might be willing to buy a copy for my friend if it goes down to $5.
But yeah, while anyone is at it and wondering to get QL and is new to Quake or AFPS in general, check out CPMA and see if you would like the feel of it. While QL and CPMA are very much different(aside from PQL), in terms of feel and movement, I'd say a good amount of the basic concepts are still there.
