Does anyone know if there are any inaccuracies in steam hours or perhaps how it's calculated? I've felt like some of my hours for some of my games were inaccurate or hours were missing.
I'm pretty sure it just tells you how long you have the game open. So, most of the time you'll end up with more than you've actually played the game for.
Steam also has to be online to count the hours. I have like 13 more hours in dark souls than it says i do, but it keeps the number that it was online for.
Yeah, there are definitely inaccuracies. Steam says I have 0 hours in some games I know I played. And I think Steam didn't start counting hours until 2009 or something like that, so anything before that isn't recorded.
I think the best way to get actual hours for TF2 is to count up the class hours. Or, after clicking view stats on the steam profile, the upper right hand corner will display "on record" hours underneath hours from the past 2 weeks.
There also seems to be thing of time spent in what I assume to be spectator, beneath the classes I have never seen until now.

I'm missing a lot of hours in some games. I'm pretty sure I have more hours in TF2 than what it shows, and I unquestionably have much more than 40 hours in Day of Defeat Source.

Class hours strictly record you actually being alive as that class.

It's also possible that some games kept their counter going well after you closed them. I have maybe 600 hours into tf2, but it records me at over 1000.
How long have you had DoD:S and how long has Steam kept track of hours? Have you played the game for over those 40 hours recently? I'm asking because, if it hasn't been a really long time since Steam started counting hours, then maybe your time playing DoD:S was before they implemented it. Unless you played 40+ hours within the past few years?
Another thing to note about class hours in tf2, is they record the time you were alive as that class when you die. Meaning if you did 4 hours of a jump map as soldier, but never died during that time, it will never count those 4 hours.

I had DoD:S right when it came out (like 2006?), so I have a feeling with DoD:S and TF2 that it did not record some of my initial time played. It's nothing that I really give a shit about, but I'm just wondering how accurate everything is.
The 40 hours weren't very recent for DoD:S, but maybe within the past two or three years. I do know that when Steam started to show the hours to the public, it only showed about 1400 or 1500 hours for me, which I thought I had a lot more than that. I'm just basing off of what my old xfire profile had, so I dunno. The steam hours didn't seem completely accurate but I dunno if it was excluding menu idle time or something.

Steam hours from the library include amount of time spent with the game open. Doesn't matter if you're AFK or if the game is alt+tabbed or anything else, it still counts hours. I know that much at least.

Woah,
Mind = blown.

i have 1300 hours on soldier alone and it says i have only 1200 and i have all the other class that have close to 100

Okay, awesome. This is exactly what I needed to see to make certain I wasn't crazy, lol.

If you are talking about TF2 hours played--> Did you reset any of your hours? I did in the past and it doesn't accurately show all my individual class played time. But I think overall hours should be accurate.

I, personally, have not heard anything similar to what Vanilla said. But I guess it could be true.
On the same note, I have looked at steam forums and other players have had inaccuracies with the steam hours played.

Nope, never did. It's not a big deal now, I just had a really difficult time believing the numbers it gave me. Now I know that all of it isn't quite accurate.

It's true. I can't remember the exact scenario, but I didn't want whatever stats of my current life to be saved (I might have been AFK as engineer for like four hours, so I didn't want my longest life to be saved as that), so I killed the hl2.exe process and it didn't save. I'm not sure if I could have just quit out of the game normally, but I know for a fact killing the process didn't save anything.
