There are two main NA TF2 leagues: UGC, and ESEA. ESEA is a paid league, and only has 6s. UGC is a free league, and has divisions for both 6s and highlander. Highlander is a 9v9 game mode with one of each class on each team. 6s is a 6v6 game mode that is usually played with a medic, a demo, two scouts, and two soldiers on each team.

If you are new to competitive TF2 and want to find a team to play heavy for, you should try to find a UGC Steel highlander team to join. ESEA Open is a 6s league, and teams generally don't use a heavy in most situations.

Here is where you can find threads posted by leaders looking for players for UGC Highlander: http://www.ugcleague.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?7-North-America

Here is where you can post an LFT thread of your own, for teams to find you and offer a tryout if they want: http://www.ugcleague.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?6-North-America

This forum isn't a good place to find highlander or UGC teams, as it's mostly focused on ESEA and 6s. I'll also add that you might have trouble finding a team that scrims on Saturdays only.

Good luck in your search for a team, though! I hope you try out 6s one day, it's a lot of fun :)
