So if any of you happened to see that eGO had a looking thread, I am listed as a backup on the roster. Reason being, is my Dell Laptop is a p.o.s that cant run tf2 anymore. Pyro flames, spies cloaking or disguising, and medic beams now are getting to the point of making my computer skip so much that its making it ridiculously hard to play soldier effectively at an IM level.
Yes I use the maxframes configs and run dx8 all that good stuff, but im not getting past 67 fps.
I want to build a new computer, but I am a poor college kid that doesnt have much money. If anyone out there could help me out with building one cheap, I would greatly appreciate it. Madoff and I came up with this basic setup for the build a month ago when it was about $100 cheaper, but the more input and ideas the better.

I need everything but a power supply, have a corsair 650W power supply, a mouse and a keyboard. I want to spend no more than $700 if possible, I heard rumors of people making quality desktops around $500 so help me out please and get me back in the game.
Thanks
Wilson!!

This will run TF2 at 120 + FPS no problem. Slightly over $500.

This is closer to 700, and it will shit on TF2.
Note: Monitor is up to you. Not going to select that for you. First one is probably the better option because of the need for a monitor. For budget needs, I generally tell folks to grab a Haans G screen.

The only thing that worries me about the first one is the CPU being an i3, I really dont know too much about computer parts and hardware, but what would the difference be with a jump to an i5 other than price of course?
And I can take out the power supply, have one of those already so that would put me under 500 before the monitor.
Thanks for the ideas so far.

Some laptops have the functionality to be used as monitors for desktops. Definitely worth looking into for your current laptop.

A lot of people will argue that you must go for a quad core, but that's not actually true at all. The majority of games will only utilize 2 cores. TF2 is very CPU heavy, but an i3 is more than enough. If you remove the power supply, you can upgrade to a 3570k and still probably stay under budget with the purchase of a monitor if you can find a good deal.

Okay thanks, next question, would using the i3 and all of that in the first link be good for running BF3? I know thats a lot more demanding than TF2 is, and since I own the game and havent been able to play it yet, I want something that would be able to run that efficiently.

Yes, BF3 is a prime example of people thinking you will need more CPU than you actually do.

I found 80% of my current setup on craigslist for $350. It was really dirty and I needed to clean everything up, but I now have a first gen i7 system that's really good.
