its not a dumb question, like wouldn't it make far more sense to wait until there are many teams close in skill then host a larger LAN rather than forcing one every year when there's very little competition.

lans are the reason high level teams keep playing over a long period of time. If not for the lan, 7 would have died, svift wouldnt exist, ...
lans are held annually and its a chance for tf2, you dont wait until teams are ready to organize a lan ? teams get ready to play at an announced lan.
