The Newbie Mix Team Drive is back for Season 27 of ESEA

The NA 6v6 Newbie Mix squad is putting on a team drive for this upcoming season, and we want it to be as large as possible. The removal of IM was a wakeup call to everyone on how ESEA TF2 has progressed throughout the past year or so, and we’re looking to help by at least giving the community the numbers it needs to bring it back. We’re hoping to not only make the barrier of entry much lower for people on the fence about joining ESEA, but facilitate more balanced matches for the entire league.

I have complete confidence that we can pull together a really strong team drive this season, but the Newbie Admins can't do this alone. We need the help of as many people as possible. Here are some volunteer positions that we need:

Mentors
Will be put in charge of a single team. Team mentors will help their team get their roster sorted properly, guide the newbies through the ropes of paying/playing in ESEA properly, and do demo/map reviews with their team. Every team that signs up will be getting a mentor, and we would absolutely love to have a large pool of people to choose the best-of-the-best from, so please sign up. It shouldn't take more than 1-2 hours a week, and a team will love you for it.

Data Entry Staff
This one is simple, and anyone with a bit of rep in the community can help (regardless of their in-game skill). All the signup forms need to be entered into a google doc that we have set up during the first week of January, and it's a very easy job if we have a handful of people on top of it.

Newbie Sponsors
This is the less fun part. Some of the people that will play in the drive teams will be kids/young teenagers with no way to pay for ESEA. The amount of money we’d need to assist every player that signs up for the drive will likely exceed hundreds of dollars. Some of that will come from ESEA referral money, and some of it can be generously donated, but any newbies that can’t get paid for in some way will unfortunately be unable to participate. When our drive ends around December 31st, we’ll have about week to find people to help pay for some of these newbies fees, otherwise it will be difficult to comfortably place them on teams. Newbie Sponsors will be people we reach out to after that date about donating money to go towards fees.

If you don't want to pay for an entire newbie, but still want to help and donate, you can donate here, and check our progress here.

To volunteer in any of these positions message Jarrett on tftv or steam with a link to your ESEA page, your email (for google docs), and the things you'd like to help out with. If you have any questions/stipulations about the positions, or need more clarification, feel to message me about that too. Newbies can ask questions here. Even if you don't want to help out in any official capacity, spread the word as much as you can. Let's do something amazing for this game we all enjoy so much.

Thank you.

This must be so much work that Jarrett & co. are doing, and all for the good of the game/community as well. Hopefully we can widen the skill range of ESEA this season. Game's not dead :)

A newbie mix team drive was what got me started in ESEA. I’m incredibly happy that I signed up for it and was helped along by a mentor. The first season was rough of course, but I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today without it.

I never participated, but I met so many people who had gotten started through newbie mixes that I always regretted not trying it myself. This is far and away one of the best services available for making the TF2 community stronger, and I'm incredibly excited to see it pop up again.

I helped out during the S20 Team Drive or whenever it was, and I'll help out again. Thanks for putting in this work, let's poll our talent as a community to make it the best experience possible for newcoming players and teams.

questions

1. when is the latest day we can sign up?
2. do we have any choice about which people we get mixed with? looking at the submissions, judging solely based on what people have written about themselves, i can already see people i would probably enjoy playing with and people i definitely wouldn't.

edit: thank you!

I'm planning on ending the drive on the 31st and if that changes I'll let people know.

If you have a general things that you want in your teammates (similar age range, similar experience, ect) then put that in the "comments" section of the form. If you have particular friends you want to play with, if you both put you want to play together I'll put you on the same team.

How much is the fee? I am able to pay for myself, but there is nowhere where it says ~what the price of a team would be.

The signup page states twice that the cost you have to pay is $30, and your 5 teammates would have to pay the same thing. ~$180 total for a whole team.

This may depend on the team. but what are the commitment levels for a backup player? My schedule changes daily, and school/work may interfere even with matches I'm backing up for.

p.s. thank you so much for hosting this! It helps people who have no prior experience join competitive, and helps grow the tf2 comp scene! :)

The shakier your schedule (as a backup), the more backups I have to put onto the team, which will likely split the already limited playtime.

Correct, just to make sure we don't get more money than we actually need.

samifaceis there a donation link?

If needed I'll post again with a more public donation link in January. I'm hesitant to put up one now because I'm not sure how much money we'd get from the community nor how many newbies will end up needing help paying.

There was an announcement in the steam group, but I was unable to connect to the mumble server. Am I misunderstanding something, or what's happening with that?

Now that we're approaching the halfway mark, and have an idea of around how many newbies will need help getting paid up, I'm going to open donations early. Keep in mind, if you want to pay up an entire $31 fee, it is much easier for us if you sign up as a Newbie Sponsor and let us give you a newbie to pay up in January.

As more newbies sign up, I can alter the goal. Thank you for helping new players get their jump start in ESEA and competitive TF2.

S27 dates haven't been officially announced yet, but I'm predicting about a 2 week gap between teams being officially formed and registration closing.
