just recently i've been hosting servers for playing games with my friends now that port forwarding on this router works properly. this works just fine for probably 10-15 minutes, but after a while my friend's ping begins to skyrocket for no apparent reason and games become unplayable. this has happened with a tf2 server, a cpma server, and a morrowind multiplayer server so far, and i can't find anything about this when searching on google. disconnecting and reconnecting doesn't solve the problem, and as far as i can tell the only fix is to restart the server.
has anyone else had this problem? how can i fix this?

is bumping these sorts of threads alright?

do you allocate memory in the launch command? maybe you're running out
do you allocate memory in the launch command? maybe you're running out
Brimstonedo you allocate memory in the launch command? maybe you're running out
how can i do this? ive got 16gb in my computer so there's not gonna be any hardware problems
also connecting to the server from my own machine is not laggy at all, just my friend ends up with ~600 ping

actually that might not be the problem, can you check your up/down here

i'm pretty sure tf2 dedicated servers need hefty upload speeds so your net might not be cuttin' it

that's some crazy down but i'm afraid that upload is at least part of the problem, i assume the machine itself is pretty beefy.
I have something like 30 upload at home and people playing on my hosted tf2 server complain about slightly higher ping than they would normally experience with a chicago server
and the machine i use to host isn't what you would call modern

i dunno if that would be a huge problem considering we're essentially neighbors

the distance is one thing, but if you dont' have the upload to support the data transfer rates then your server will lag and people's ping will spike

i guess that sort of makes sense, but the thing is the server works just fine for 10-20 minutes before his ping eventually spikes

what are the specs exactly on ur computer
also are you attempting to host and play on the same machine?

oh ok that might be it then
hosting a dedicated server can be more resource intensive than expected, and coupled with a game like tf2 things might not work out that well
even in other games, such as don't starve together, the dedicated server is poorly optimized and actually takes a behemoth of a computer to both run the server without significant latency alone, let alone play the client version at the same time.
i'd recommend trying to run the server alone and kill all other programs. Then see how your friend's performances fare when you aren't playing the game at the same time.
if that doesn't help then i'm not sure what could be wrong beyond a network issue like not having a fast enough upload speed :(
