I occasionally launch steam using "-console -no-browser" in my target (for that sweet, sweet FPS boost on my potato computer).
Launching this way appears to have the bonus side effect of keeping the abomination that is the new friends UI from appearing. Instead, you get the good old-fashioned one we're all used to.

The method i posted earlier lets you keep your browser.

I've been using the steam chat beta since its release and I'm pretty satisfied tbh. It does take time to get used to it, I admit. When I tried to revert back a few days ago, however, I just couldn't get used to the old one again. The most bothering in the new one is not being able to accept invitations to games/parties sometimes, not being able to copy chat logs and change your status to Busy or Offline (there is still a way around for the last one). I like the rest though.

we're in the fucking future boys
just let me fucking join my friends/see what they're playing through friends list again instead of having to go their profile
although i do like being able to play youtube videos in the steam chat instead of someone linking me something spamming "WATCH IT WATCH IT" and my poor imac can barely keep up

Updates are nice and all but I don't see why they can't allow us to choose the older version, I had all my steam groups sorted for years

its not cool how my friends can just send me gay porn and im unable to do anything about it untill ive already laid my eyes on it
also not alright that all this super epic cool embedding increases RAM usage and has a very noticable effect on my fps ingame
not using it untill that shit gets fixed + the forced friends catagories are gone

there was a steam update last night, which reverted my "old chat" to the new thing again. I cant seem to bring it back to how it was. I was using the method described by screwball at the end of page 2, anyone has a solution ?

try exiting steam, removing the launch options that enable old steam, launch steam, exit it again and then re add them and launch and see if its back to old steam, ive heard several people talking about this working for them

OK i fixed it.
Right click on your steam icon, properties, and in target just add -steamos (remove any -nochatui -nofriendsui if you had them)
Worked for me, again with metro for steam skin, idk if it works for vanilla steam

The new chat vs the old chat (when enabled) has better performance most people just prefer the old one more due to less visual clutter. Technically the old chat with all the web stuff disabled performed better but the store was unusable unless you did it via web browser, haven't found a way to disable all the extra stuff for steam other than chat / game library stuff yet. (then again I haven't looked to hard)

Actually i think my solution is now preventing me from opening steam overlay ingame, can anyone else confirm this ?
Edit: I've been confirmed it does

honestly with this update the new ui doesn't really give me a reason to go back
the ui feels pretty responsive, doesn't seem to lag, and we have settings to turn off image embeds now

new chat timestamps are still awful and make copying chat logs dreadful

i just liked having a neat small chat box, thats all steam needed. now it is absolutely massive and everything wastes so much space.
