Posting for a friend:
My headset is not being recognized as a microphone, when its microphone works. I have been able to use the microphone on other systems but not my PC. Also the headset is being shown as a pair of speakers and i can only access my mic through the microphone built into my monitor.

Just to be clear, has he tried windows diagnostics? It's useless a lot of the time but sometimes it helps the problem or shows whats the problem with the computer recognizing it.

theres a few things that could be causing this problem
1) he could have the mic/headphones jacks plugged into the wrong ports. red is headphones and green is mic
2) your mic is probably being recognized as headphones because it's being seen as just a device with an audio output. if you right click on your device in device manager you should be able to configure settings for it, i.e. it to input instead of output
3) worst case scenario is that his drivers are fucked and he needs to update/repair them

What headset is it? It's possible that windows won't see it as a mic device if it's a PS4 headset or something like that.

He said it's a HP omen headset, and it is seen in the device manager as an input and output

Can he view disabled devices in windows? I have a feeling that the mic is "disabled" in windows and being hidden by the system.
