TForgotten2 - Competitions on forgotten maps!

Hey folks... TL:DR at bottom!

A few friends and I had the great idea of running a competition, but for forgotten/old maps, like the Asteroids game mode, and passtime game modes to start. We'd have teams of six and any group of people could be a team. We would also stream the games over Twitch and basically just play as many games as we have teams, until we get to the final two teams and then they would battle it out. It'd be for anyone, whether new to TF2 or veterans. Ideally, we'd like 3 newer players (under 100 hours) and 3 veteran players per team, but we would get who we could.

For now, it'd be 100% free for anyone to join and get their name out there in the land of competititve TF2. Later, if it really picks up, we might charge per team and have the winning team collect the whole pot. I am 100% ready to do this, but I just need some help spreading the word. I already have a server/homelab that I run that has some spare power that could run a Twitch stream and a game of TF2. I also need to design a Twitch overlay, but that's an end-game goal.

Is this something that sounds fun? Let me know please in the comments, and if some of you want to already organize a team, let me know!

Absolutely! Whatever the teams want to do. I'd like to start off doing maps like Passtime however, but if those old 6 player maps make people want to play, I'll do it.

ya this seems like a massive trainwreck and im getting the impression you've put 0 thought into what goes into running a tf2 tournament or even what people are looking for when they play comp tf2.

just the fact you mention passtime is a pretty massive red flag

I wouldn't say it's "comp" really, it is really more of an organized match system with teams and a stream. I'm not aiming for top streamers and "l33t playerz", I'm aiming for that one guy who wants to have fun with his friends in fun game modes, who maybe wants a taste of competition and being in a team they know.

Not all TF2 players just play comp.

I wouldn't say it's "comp" really, it is really more of an organized match system with teams and a stream. I'm not aiming for top streamers and "l33t playerz", I'm aiming for that one guy who wants to have fun with his friends in fun game modes, who maybe wants a taste of competition and being in a team they know.

Not all TF2 players just play comp.

razzmatazzi mean in theory this would be fun if all 12 players on the server took it seriously and were competent, but if we are dealing with 'new' players with 100 hours it would be aids to watch imo. like the skill gap in tf2 is so large that any of those 100hr players would become redundant i think, and would end up being a 3v3 with the "veteran" (?) players. i know players are meant to learn somewhere but i dont think that argument can be used here when half the server is infinitely better than them and its on aids maps/gamemodes (not to say i dont enjoy these maps, but they are definitely terrible for a learning experience). also i really dont want to see the new players just going engi on passtime or seeing an engi heavy defense on asteroid

i wouldnt expect this competition to be really serious and shenanigans are fun ofc, but i can imagine it being boring quite quickly with atleast 6 people on the server just getting lost and doing absolutely nothing. 100hrs in a lot of other games is quite a lot but in tf2 i find ppl with 100 hrs are super garbo which is completely fine if they are my friend and we are playing a pub together, but to watch on a livestream may not be the best. also may be bit awkward for anyone casting :/

and pls dont underestimate how much of a hassle this may be to get organised. i know its a different scale but if u look at how rocky a lot of i63 (or any tf2 lan) has been im sure u may rethink some decisions. also i know how it feels to play low level comp and its the worst fucking thing to get 12 players in a server by a certain time

tl:dr- its a fun concept but pls dont underestimate how difficult it may be to organise and consider who competes seriously

I've already thought about a good amount of this. I do feel like that may be too little people, but it's just a beginning goal. In the beginning, we can do small teams to just create some interest for the comp, we can even do smaller yet old 6v6 maps if it works out better. Yeah, 100 hours is a bit sad, but it's just a goal really. If I can't balance the teams too much, that's okay. We will work that out once we get some team submissions.

As far as organizing experience, I used to help organize some tournaments on older games in the time before Steam, and I've even had offers of help for organizing this from people who have experience.

As someone who's been around a lot of tournament organizers for pug group-style or sized tournaments, this is the least planned so far that i've seen. Before you post to a community forum about it to gauge interest about one of the many concept tournaments i've seen pop up recently you need

  • maps
  • format
  • tourney system (match.tf, faceit, toornament, essentials, etc)
  • clearly defined rules that don't blow (the threshold for comp on TF2center is still at least 300 hours, and forcing teams to take on new players wont be fun for either experienced or new players)
  • a central place of communication (usually discord)
  • some experienced mods to help you get your stuff running
  • at least a loose schedule/timeframe
  • pretty much anything other than "hey guys i have this half-baked idea and am gonna host a tournament for it and it'll get massive!"

There's a ton of shit that goes into tournament organizing and frankly you don't seem very prepared to post about it, let alone host.
