It seems recently whenever I have had to do any actual work like an essay submission for uni, I have been unable to force myself to actually write for more than 10 minutes at a time without staring off into the distance or looking on the internet. Gaming or stuff like youtube isnt the problem as i usually work at a library, its gotten to the point where it takes me like 3 hours to write something that could be achieved in half an hour.

Does anyone have any tips for stopping procrastination?

idk how it works man during big tests/exams my brain goes into like hyperfocus mode and i do like a question every 30s and write essays in 20 min but when im sitting at home/library working on assignments literally everything else in the world is more interesting than what i'm supposed to work on and it takes me multiple hours to do what i know i can do in like half an hour.

here is some stuff that worked for me (assuming youre in college):

airplane mode works wonders. really just stay away from social media (and yes this site is basically social media).

also just general motivation: have a think about ur life and why u r pursing this education (i think a lot of ppl just get pushed into college by their parents); hang around with the achievers in ur class because their discipline will rub off

Setting goals and rewarding yourself has been the most effective thing I've seen my friends do. Some people do that "study for 45-whatever minutes out of an hour" and spend the leftover time relaxing for several hours at a time.

I would just finish a section/paper/chapter and knock out for 30 minutes, rinse and repeat.

Hellbentalso just general motivation: have a think about ur life and why u r pursing this education (i think a lot of ppl just get pushed into college by their parents); hang around with the achievers in ur class because their discipline will rub off

This works wonders, as you progressively build up a picture of what you're trying to do over time. Nothing's worse than spending 2-3 years only to realize that you want to switch majors or not even continue college at that point. People motivated WILL make ends meet, regardless of their initial capabilities.

That sort of leads into another point, you might want to figure out how to schedule simple tasks for each day, ideally in the morning, such as "one section in this paper, two chapters in bio", etc. That way each day you can set/meet goals, and each night you can figure out where you are and how much left you have to do. You don't have to have a minute-by-minute checklist to live by, but it definitely helps to have daily goals so that you can live through the long processes involved with upper-level education. Just remember that it's a marathon: each small change helps.

All_Over_RSjust don't study

this seems like Helpful Advice

in seriousness though, something i'd recommend doing is thinking about things - say an essay or uni project - in terms of the individual parts that need to be done, rather than sitting down and mentally forcing yourself to 'do an essay'. i finished uni a few years ago and even reading that back now fills me with dread, haha. and though there might be other reasons why you're finding it tough, i think it never helps to force yourself to complete a task that feels so enormous and insurmountable (especially when it's a paper of a few thousand words, or so)

if it's a uni essay, maybe just say like, okay, today i'm going to do a plan, and then later on i can do an introduction and one section, or something like that. or if you have loads of reading, set yourself realistic goals (rather than I Will Read The Entire Library, read half a page and then flit over to twitter)

it means you also get some satisfaction on the way and a sense of actually completing things, which can be motivating - rather than delaying that until 3000 words later on (by which time you're probably burnt out enough to be unable to feel it anyway)

hope that helps. agree about lo-fi hip hop

edit: think i basically repeated Gladbound in more words - whoops, but agreed.
