Mass shooting on tram
12 casualties, 3 dead, 9 injured, 3 of which are critical
Suspect is Gökmen Tanis, 37 year old Turk
Suspect shouted "Allahu Hakbar" witness says
Suspect still at large
Suspect was previously arrested for IS-links, fought in Chechnya, was a recluse
Suspect was previously arrested for rape, burglary, attempted manslaughter, peeing in a cell and threatening a police officer
Police are advising to stay away from Kanaleneiland area
The car the suspect used was jacked shortly before attack
Car was found 3 hours after attack by civilian
First time in the Netherlands that the highest terror threat level is active, level 5
Prayers to the all victims, however I don't underatand how a man with ties to terrorist group and previous heavy charges was allowed to roam free. I feel the worst could happen, these 2 attacks in last 7 days could just be the beginning of something horrible. I hope I am wrong.

"Suspect was previously arrested for IS-links, fought in Chechnya, was a recluse" this was not confirmed in dutch news sources. However he does have a record of burglary, vandalism and driving under influence.
YohnWhat the fuck. Aubriac is from Utretch

I have family in Utrecht, my grandfather grew up there during Nazi occupation and I have a lot of distant relatives there and there is a lot of worry. It's one of the nicest places in Holland with some of the nicest people. Everyone is feeling a lot of anger, especially towards the incompetent Dutch government that can't even catch him and seem to have known about this (and many others) yet continue to do little.

They caught the dumb criminal right as you were posting this drivel.

It was very difficult to prevent this, but the social workers here did an excellent job. After the incident itself they handled the situation very well. The streets were empty almost everywhere and there was no panic. Earlier this evening they caught the guy who's responsible for all this.
Me and probably many other people didn't think Utrecht would be a place where this would happen, but the government still prepared in case it would ever take place. I can't say I'm angry towards them. It could've been far worse honestly.

First of all, the IS-links are not confirmed. Neither are the exact purposes of his crime.
Second, there's bunch of people that have done something bad in the past or are in some way related to IS but we can't just monitor all of them. We have a group of anti-terrorism people who immediatly take action once they're sure someone is up to something. And they do occasionally find out about people and arrest them. This guy (Gökmen Tanis) didn't seem to be suspicious enough despite his previous crimes. There's just things you can't prevent.

I disagree and think this and many other attacks CAN be prevented.

It's one thing to say "the police should monitor more and get a better success rate at preventing this" which is fairly uncontroversial even if you disagree (on grounds of too much government surveillance being bad). But sarcastically saying "haha yes of course, how could anybody possibly see this coming" based off unconfirmed claims after a shooting just makes you look like a dick.

funny how you didn't say the same thing about the NZ shooting even though that guy literally posted pictures of the guns he used covered in racist iconography two days in advance
I wonder what made him so elusive and this attack so preventable??
