#21 Government Shut down? in Off Topic
AoshimaAs someone who lives in a country with universal healthcare that actually works (like Obamacare apparently will not, according to Bloodsire...)

America is weird.

It could "work" in that it will get more people covered, but it's side-effects are troubling.

pernixRepublicans don't want anything good to happen for Obama so democrats look bad. They need to do their jobs and stop jerking off to try to get reelected.

I would doubt any of you will actually be effected by Obamacare, the majority of you being covered under your parents care. It effects me, and let me tell you when it effects you, there is some serious BS surrounding it. . . not just in how confusing it is and how no one seems to really know or be able to explain how much it will really cost, it screws me over in various ways.

1) I work part-time while I look for a full-time job within my major. My part-time job is unionized. Previously, I had healthcare and coverage, it wasn't great but it was something, and it was basically free. Under the new law not only do I lose all union coverage (the company simply doesn't bargain for it with the union anymore due to the mandates passed down by Obama) I am supplemented with no coverage. This means I'll have to pay into Obamacare or pay a fine on my taxes in April...more on this in a second

2) Because Obamacare enforces anyone averaging over 30 work hours a week to be provided healthcare by their company (or that company takes a fine) the company I work for has stopped hiring full time workers. It has even laid off full-time workers (I work for a super-market, those full-timers are "lifers," they live a low standard of life and they have no other skill). It now hires 2 part-timers for every 1 full-time job, and no part-timer is allowed to work over 24 hrs a week to ensure they never average out to 30. Not only does this make the job itself more difficult, it brings the part-time workers (who are mostly also "lifers" and use the job to supplement their income) down to a level where they no longer bring in a week what they used to. And since they are part-time, they no longer have healthcare provided.

3) Under Obamacare these people, making substantially less, will need to pay for health-insurance. Myself, very burdened by student loan costs on-top of a lower income will be forced to buy Healthcare.

4) Obamacare is not free healthcare, people, it is universal healthcare, or a tax. Why is it a tax?

5) After doing lots of research on the web the lowest value I can find for a year of healthcare costs would be 300 dollars. I am not sure how reliable that number is, but I'll use it. This gets me (if I've read through all the convolution correctly) at most the "bronze plan" which is pretty poor and slightly better than the free care I was getting with my union. I could pay that a year (which isn't so bad for me since I don't own house, and have few expenses other than student loans) or I could pay the fine on my taxes.

The fine is 90 bucks.

I get sick once a year. Was sick last week. I had strep-throat. I went to the doctor and bought an anti-biotic out of pocket. It cost me $125 for everything in the end. With the bronze plan, I save maybe half that, but still need to pay for the bronze plan. Tell me, will I be buying Obamacare or paying the tax-fine?

The problem is Obamacare needs young people like myself who are generally not taking much out of the system to be paying into the system. The young need to offset the cost of the old, but the price of the fine is much less, and many young people simply do not have the money.

For me, it's a few extra bucks, but for lots of people, who stuck in dead-end jobs (the people I see almost every-day) they are being hurt by this. Their company is giving less. Providing less hours and no longer offering a plan for part-time workers. The union (which lobbied laughably hard for Obama during the election) is in panic, the employees who voted for Obama also in panic, wondering why they did so.

Now you could say "but it isn't Obama's fault, it is the dumb company for being mean" Sure. But anyone with sense knew this would happen. Businesses are there to make money. You can legislate a business and they'll just find a way to make their money. If I raise the taxes on a company, they raise their prices. They lose little money, but the consumer is hurt. If I tell a company they must provide healthcare for full-time workers, they limit the hiring of full time-workers, and everyone is hurt.

I am all for universal Healthcare. Obamacare is something else. It is a bad law, and I am happy the conservatives are trying all they can to stiffen it.

#170 Why do so many people bash 9v9? in TF2 General Discussion
skyrideIf you're looking at it from an esports perspective, the resources thing is kinda true. It's this weird harry potter-esque "neither can live while the other survives" thing. The fact they both exist is a testament to the fact that there's enough people willing to play both, but realistically when you have two competing game modes trying to be the incarnation of competitive TF2, it's hard to present it to sponsors, ignoring entirely that it means you have double the work to cover, cast, play, manage, admin, etc.

Maybe, but I think we can hope for it to be something like Tennis doubles. Same game, different way to play it.

#24 I get too angry/depressed when we get rolled in Off Topic

Man up. You can handle this. There is no need to ask us.

It is just a game. Remind yourself that in the grand scheme of things: success, life, and happiness, no one will care that your team was rolled. I don't even care right now.

It makes zero difference in defining who you are, so don't let it affect who you are.

the problem isn't the top teams taking the best talent, or luring the better players off the lower teams, the problem is the best talent on low teams getting wide-eyed when a top team asks them to join

I remember when EMG only had b4nny as a superstar. People always wondered when he would leave EMG, and you always found out this team or that team asked him to join, only b4nny didn't leave his team. Ducky too was asked on several occasions to leave the "lower" teams, but he stayed true* and didn't kill his up-and-coming team just to play for the "best"

moral is, stick it out, stick together, and when all else fails...become funny, likeable, handsome and just obnoxious enough to the point where everyone is like "is he for real or just joking...haha who cares he's great" and then you roster ride the fuck out of them

*= maybe cheated, probably not, but maybe

Harbs...

All ya did was quote me then use keywords that I typed to say the points you already wanted to make, often times restating what I said, or ignoring the larger points I was making. I'm not attacking HL, it is a fine and fun gamemode as you say. I'm just breaking down why it has the stigma it does, and why it will keep that stigma.

Perhaps you'll be satisfied with this analogy:

When you look at HL you see a lot of static, it is fun to watch and you know a lot of planning and execution has gone into the plays a top teams make. Barring a player going off on a tear

I enjoy 9v9/HL greatly, but here is why it is considered a "lesser" form of competitive...

When valve made TF2 they produced a game that evolved from the other TF games, chiefly TFC. TFC was a game where two opposing teams of a potential 9 different classes very chaotically death-matched around some apparent objective of capturing the other teams Flag. There was seemingly no set game-mode in TFC. There was attack/defend, classic capture the flag, invasion, etc...

To be played competitively, TFC required an outside community which establish rules and restrictions that fostered a somewhat orderly and competitive benchmark for teams to play each-other by. This format looked at the nine classes as tools to be used within that game-mode... the classes were not part of the game-mode itself, thus not all of them were necessary.

Fast forward back to TF2: Valve tried to clean things up from TFC, envisioning a Control-Point/Area control based game-type that would universally stand as the game-mode that their updated 9 classes would play in. At the same time, Valve created an extremely casual environment, working it right into the death-match system (via crits and random-damage). The idea seemed to be a structured sandbox of 9 classes with different abilities, all goal-orientated toward defending/attacking/controlling specific points throughout the map.

From here several things happened:

1) Players from other games, mostly other competitive games (namely, TFC and CS), tried to etch out a competitive way to play TF2. This very clearly meant striking a balance between the order a competitive format demands and the chaos that the TF2 system supplied. Multiple formats were tested, 6v6 became a palatable way of organizing and executing competitive games that seemed more devoid of the spammy and casual happenings of the public/non-specialized game.

2) That Public game
