In the article, they note that Steam has only had the "Hours played" profile stat since 2009. Most likely everybody got their fill of HL2 long before then and hasn't played since.
This also includes the first year+ of tf2's life, when it was probably notably more popular.

i really want to get in on one of these lans eventually (since i should be out of school by then), but i've heard so many horror stories about taking a desktop on an airplane, although there's no other option for me besides dropping a few grand on a ~ gaming laptop ~
