tomroadrunnerNo, it's just that this is something I run into all the time. Psych majors, English majors, anything else, when you're in school you think you're the definitive authority, because you've had this whole new world opened to you that a large portion of the world is seemingly ignorant to. Then you get out of school and into the field, and you realize how little you know. Same thing happened to me.
Basically this:

OP, I am so glad you made this thread. This is something that I have thought about before but did not make a thread about because I thought the community would just jump down my throat and tell me to stop whining. I am glad to see that at least some of the community has shown respect and maturity.
Some of the arguments in this thread:
I'm not part of the demographic that would ever be called these words, and I don't think it's offensive, so it's okay.
That is not even in the remotest sense close to how empathy works.

I AM part of the demographic that can be called these words, and I don't think it's offensive, so it's okay.
Thanks for trivializing the feelings of everyone else who can find these things offensive just because YOU don't think it's a problem.
I use the words casually, and as long I don't use them to actively insult the demographic in question, it's okay.
But you do use the words to be synonymous with "bad" or "dumb," which is STILL INSULTING to the demographic in question, just like obviously so. Subtle prejudice is still prejudice.
What if instead of calling someone a faggot every time they did something you didn't like, you called them a nigger instead? It's okay as long as they're not a black person? C'mon guys, seriously.
All these [other groups of people] say it all the time, so it's not a problem.
Man, why did people care so much about Jim Crow laws anyway; all these other states had them too, so who cares? /s
Thank you for all the thoughtful posts from people like OP (hanbrolo), ctrlfmuffin, pudding cup, and ehFk.
This basically sums up the entire thread:
ctrlfmuffinThe word doesn't personally offend me, but I don't see how that's even relevant. You don't get to decide how people should react to the things you say.
