getting stuck in between the signs in granary yard
i'm not dismantling my old computer
FzeroFoxhey, i haven't built a computer in over two years, so i figured i should upgrade now
i don't overclock because i'm not willing to risk anything just to get more power, no matter how small the chance of failure is (because shipping to/from hawaii is a pain in the ass)
i'm willing to spend up to $2k on parts, but i'd probably need to buy the OS (because i don't pirate) and maybe a new keyboard too
i haven't been following anything about hardware, but i remember seeing a post about a new CPU thing coming out this summer, but i think it dealt with overclocking so idk
i don't really know what the differences are between sandy bridge and ivy bridge, or i5s or i7s, but i'm looking up everything now and just felt like making a thread in case anyone wanted to help me pick out parts :3
all of my builds usually incorporate intel chipsets and nvidia gpus though, and my only goal is to make a build that can run pso2 smoothly, as well as diablo/bioshock infinite/guild wars 2 since those games currently crash on my current desktop
thanks for any suggestions in advance :3
Can you put the specs that you have now? I think it's a little odd that you're crashing from diablo
i'm crashing because my gpu is probably bad
it crashes on gw2 and a few other games too, where i see massive artifacts before crashing to desktop (nvidia drivers stopped working etc etc)
my current build is

with a GTX 470
i'm still going to be using this desktop for video editing and music and stuff, but i'm going to be using the desktop i will be building purely for playing games on
sorry for all the links, that's the easiest list that i have from an old e-mail when consulting with the tech guy that helped me build it lol
Pheeshdon't go with SLI where possible. There's always a question of microstutter and other issues, not to mention it ups your power supply requirements.
If I were to splurge on a setup I'd probably get a geforce 670 and a lightboost capable 120hz monitor (benQ ++). People have found that the nvidia '3d' lightboost feature can be used to greatly improve motion clarity in regular 2d mode. http://www.blurbusters.com/
That would likely raise your gaming experience so much more than other things, especially as you play FPS games.
i don't need any more monitors
i currently use a samsung 120hz monitor for my main rig and have a spare benq monitor for whenever i play console games, so i'd just hook the desktop up to the benq
thanks for all the responses, i didn't expect that many people that wanted to help out :D
zilisCro0Ked_i5s are fine for gaming but if you do video/photo editing or streaming and whatnot you may want to consider an i7. for video card i have a gtx660 and it runs everything i can throw at it fine. since you have a budget of $2k here is my build- it's around the same price range as you're looking at. might give you an idea as to what you should look at.What's the point of getting i7-3770K if he's not going to overclock?
What's the point of getting H100 if he's not going to overclock?
OP, post at what resolutions you're going to be playing at.
my monitors native resolution runs at 1680x1050
KiritoI was bored, so I just made you a full build here. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ObxI
Since most people have hard drives laying around these days, I decided to go with a 240gb ssd. You also get 2 GTX 670s on SLI :3.
the last time i ran an SLI build, i had to disable it for 90% of online games because it would either crash or not do anything or actually give me worse performance (at least for tf2)
is the price actually worth the performance for running two GTX 670s in SLI

edit:
thanks for all the responses, here's my finalized build if anyone was curious

after all this denial about you being gay for being really into vampires, the truth comes out on the forums
downpour
i'd play with tri all day if you know what i mean wink wink
i never play tf2 and it doesn't feel like i'm that rusty when people ask me to ring for them lol
honestly i think taking a long break can help people improve once they get back up to speed again (at least that's how it works with rhythm and fighting games). i'm not allowing myself to play tf2 because of my classes schedule, but it's similar to your situation considering your hours are going to basically drop to 0 for a few weeks. imo just don't worry about it and do what you have to do
frog fractions is the best flash game i have ever played

Here's what I was suggested via /r/buildapcforme. Do any of you more computer savvy people have recommendations on how to make it cheaper/more optimized for playing TF2? I think the video card is a bit expensive (at $229 O.O), but I don't really know whether it's necessary to get good performance. Thanks. Oh, and I know there's only 120 GB of memory (on the SSD), but I have a 500 GB laptop that I would use for most other stuff. I just thought that it would be good to get the SSD now and install the OS and TF2 and other games on that and maybe add a HDD later instead of getting a HDD with more memory and then having to transfer all of that to the SSD.
EDIT: I can't type.
for tf2, get an i5-3570k or 2500k instead of that one because they're unlocked and are just better. 7870 is good for other games like bf3, fc3, crysis and shit. if you want to play both at good frames just get a 7850 and you'll be fine. tbh if u want to keep the 7870 and either of the 2 processors i listed above just get the ssd later and a $50-$60 hard drive for now and use the money u saved for a better processor. the one u picked is good and all but theres no reason not to put in a couple dollars and get the better one.
what does locked mean?
do you mean like it's at a fixed speed and you can't overclock it or something?
i personally never do any overclocking, so i was just curious what you meant by that since i'm due to build a new desktop pretty soon

looking at other peoples configuration files could help you with ideas on what you want to do
everything is preference, and you really don't need to script much of anything in this game unless you are nitpicky on things per class
