I think anyone on these forums that still recognizes my name knows that I'm not the greatest TF2 player to ever grace the scene. For a whole host of IRL reasons I stopped playing competitively after playing in IM back in S23. I never thought the best thing I did for the scene was playing in it, though. The work I did with the rest of the newbie mix admins is a much bigger deal to me, and the 1k+ players we brought into the scene over my tenure actively working with newbie mixes is what I look back on most fondly.

For anyone who doesn't know, I'm a school teacher that has been working on applying educational best practices to TF2 (because honestly I'm so freaking bored and really missed teaching). This effort has culminated in the (admittedly, slightly stacked) Newbie Mix team drive team Tino and I are coaching placing 3rd seed in the Amateur (not newcomer) division this season.

I think another big thing to note is how it may not always affect high level play quite as much, but it can make lower level play much faster and focused.

The medic on the newbie team I'm coaching runs it almost always but sometimes switches to ubersaw on desperation holds (or if ppl dont have the right whitelist).

It's not a big deal if the last time you cheated was a decade ago. And honestly it wasn't a huuuge deal then, either. Cheating is super wrong, but it's just a game. It's not like you robbed a pharmacy. Don't be too hard on yourself

in fairness we pay into it and (i think) that is the full year worth of prizes across all divs. i was much more pointing out the whole "na plays hat game this fall" than anything else.
