#38 Worst Christmas Present in Off Topic

My mom's a kindergarten teacher and often gets really weird stuff from her kids. One kid gave her size XXXL underwear (she's 5 foot, 90 lbs so the underwear was literally larger than her torso), a blindfold, deodorant, and a bag of airline peanuts for Christmas.

From the beginning I was expecting Obi-Wan Solo to be killed by his son

Who the fuck is Obi-Wan Solo?

It's a joke about how Han Solo's role in Ep 7 is basically identical to Kenobi's in Ep 4.

Was kinda disappointed with the characterization. Finn's a dude who spent his entire life with the First Order, was presumably brainwashed (?), and then decides that killing people is too much for him in his first battle. Which is fine. What I was less fine with was, not 30 minutes later, when he starts whooping and hollering as he guns down his former brethren. I'm not asking for him to be portrayed in a realistic manner like someone who's escaping a cult they spent their entire life in, that's not really what Star Wars is about, but some consistency would be nice. He's also weird in that he's shown as being pretty competent with a blaster, manages to at least wound Ren in a lightsaber duel, but is also played for laughs and loses a lightsaber duel to a stormtrooper.

From the beginning I was expecting Obi-Wan Solo to be killed by his son, but the actual scene was kinda disappointing. Ren's portrayed as someone who lacks control over his emotions, someone who lashes out at everything around him when met with failure. But during the bridge scene, it seemed like he was emotionally manipulating his father before he kills Solo. Ren doesn't strike me as someone subtle enough for that sort of play. It's possible it wasn't manipulation, that Ren changed his mind at the last minute and genuinely fell to the dark side in that moment, but the fact that he gets his shit wrecked in the next battle by two completely untrained people doesn't reinforce the new-found power/determination he should have after committing.

Visuals were stunning though, and I was fine with it being a rehash of Ep. 4. I'm not sure if I'm getting harder and harder to please, or if I had seen this movie 10 years ago I'd have the same complaints

/r/tf2 userLastly, I am afraid to play on Valve servers after the recent Phlog buff. In spite of all of the above, I actually play more Heavy than Pyro. My recent fixation has been defensive Brass Beast Heavy on Doublecross and 2Fort. 20% damage bonus + 20% damage resistance translates into endless tears from tiny baby men. The meta of the Brass is thinking 3 moves ahead, knowing what one is going to be facing in the next minute and being prepared for it. Also, binding snd_restart to a key (motor noise is now silent, at least from my perspective) and, in the words of Little John, spin down for what? Currently, I don't think even 600+ hours as heavy and a Brass is going to save me from the Phlog onslaught.

How the hell is it possible to have 600 hours on heavy? And not be high plat in the class at the very least? That's terrifying.

#49 Favorite genre of music to listen to while playing in Music, Movies, TV

Usually bluegrass. Sometimes folks like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels, Lyle Lovett, George Jones, any of the Hank Williams family, or some more relaxed electronic music.

#110 What do YOU want for Christmas in Off Topic
yukia good time with family & friends. The more I've aged, the less I've cared about people spending money on me unnecessarily.

Boring and cliche, I know. sorry =[

My Christmas present was help from my parents to pay for a flight home. Couldn't think of anything I'd rather have.

That, and my grandma just sent me a Texas shaped waffle iron for Christmas. I'm over the moon.

#25 GameSense $1000 Monthly Mayhem: Semi-Finals and Grand Final in Events
GetawhaleSo we should ask the question.. why did everyone forfeit everything? Did they not care? Was it because it was a Saturday? Nobody was around? Because there was no second place prize? It might be helpful to know what happened so we can avoid this and structure tournaments better next time.

When our team signed up we were under the impression we'd have options on which night to play. Since there weren't enough signups and all games ended up being played Wednesday evenings (the one night we couldn't make it), we had to forfeit all our games. Despite this, we somehow still qualified for the semi-finals, but by the time we realized this (I wasn't expecting an 0-5 team to reach the semi-finals) I wasn't able to assemble enough people on our roster to play today.

I'm not sure if the format was changed, if I misunderstood the tourney system, or both.

#18 Turkey shoots down russian fighter jet in Off Topic

My guess is Russia's testing the waters. Turkey previously warned Russia to stay out of their airspace after a couple of infringements, and Russia wanted to know whether Turkey/NATO was bluffing. While this isn't going to be good for Russia/Western relations, it's not going to mean T-14s rolling across Fulda Gap.

#333 PARIS TERRORIST ATTACK in Off Topic
SpaceCadetA time will come, probably after many more attacks, when the countries of the west realize you can't be civilized with cultures/religions that have not evolved to that level. At one time ,Christianity was just as violent as Islam and perhaps even more brutal but we evolved in the west and so did our belief system. The same has simply not happened in the middle east and both cultures will continue to clash.

It wasn't too long ago that popular wisdom held Catholic nations were too uncivilized to handle democracy because Catholicism is rooted in obedience to authority. At that time (30ish years ago), the vast majority of Catholic nations (mainly East Europe, Italy, Latin America) were controlled by dictatorships of various forms, which lent credence to this sort of mentality. Post Cold War, it's quite obvious that trying to link the many disparate reasons for a lack of democratic rule in all those different regions to religion was fucking retarded but apparently we still haven't learned that international relations are complex and multifaceted.

#161 PARIS TERRORIST ATTACK in Off Topic
ScrewballAoshimaUh. Didn't the IRA do a whole bunch of this shit in the 90s?The IRA's attacks were against legitimate targets. ISIS's are not.
You can't compare bombing a financial center to shooting up a football stadium.
The two are in no way comparable.

Are we talking about the destruction of the World Trade Centers here?

Like, I know you're getting at the bombings of London's financial center and I listen to Only Our Rivers Run Free on a daily basis but you're completely negating the fact that the IRA did in fact kill many many civilians and no matter whether or not you agree with their cause those attacks were unacceptable by any international standards on military doctrine.

AoshimachugsdecderchugsFucking muslims man
There is nothing wrong with being Muslim.

edited for simplicity.

Literally no other group would do this.

Uh. Didn't the IRA do a whole bunch of this shit in the 90s?

The Troubles were largely dying down in the 90s, the ceasefire began in 98 I believe. If you're looking for terrorism and violence in Northern Ireland, you'd want to look at the Border Campaign in the late 50s, the split between the Provos and the OIRA in the late 60s, and the Long War in the 80s. There've been small spikes of Republican activity since then (early 2010s) but not nearly as much as the early campaigns. I don't know as much about Unionist violence but I'd not be shocked if it occurred during generally the same times.

But yes, your point about non-Muslim groups in Ireland committing acts of terror and violence is right. Just on a slightly different timeline.

#48 Last day to sign up!(find Razer players/team here) in TF2 General Discussion

So this is a little late for this tournament but if someone could help me out to understand the interface I'd appreciate it. Our team schedule on the razer site has 4 games on December 5 scheduled, and I found out tonight that we had 2 games we had to forfeit. They show up on our match history, and I'm guessing we have 2 games next Wednesday as well, but I can't view them on our match schedule. Where do we have to go to view our matches for this tournament specifically, and what exactly are the matches on our schedule for if they aren't for the tournament?

#62 Fallout 4 in Other Games
kirbyThat's how it was for FNV. I don't think you could alter run speed via files, so I did through the console and I got no achievements. Pretty sure I fully completed everything too :(

When you open and use the console, it disables achievements for that specific playthrough. Meaning you can set all your SPECIAL stats to 10, give yourself 100 in every skill, and late game equipment, save and quit the game, then boot Fallout up again, load your game, and have all your modified stuff while still being able to unlock achievements. It's possible you don't have to exit Fallout entirely, just reload, but I'm not sure about that.
