I can't connect to certain servers. On some of them, I can't connect on ethernet but for some reason it lets me connect on wifi (eg kroketbrigade and certain pubs) on others I can't connect at all (eg tragicservers).
It's stuck on "connecting to server" then it just says connection failed after 4 retries

One of my steam friends uses it, he has a really shit pc. Says it doesnt do that much for tf2 but it helps him a lot in other games like hearthstone

Firewell thats odd, i can only randomly troubleshoot from here...
- turn off steam cloud so none of the changes might be overwritten by badly saved files.
- make a backup folder on your desktop (or anywhere outside of the steam folders), move your "\cache ; \cfg ; \download ; \downloadlists ; \maps ; \replay ; \screenshots ; \workshop" folders from \tf\ to that backup folder (those are all the folders where i think files are being changed usually) and then verify game cache again (to redownload now missing files).
- start tf2 using the -autoconfig launch option (and ideally remove all other launch options).
- verify that steam actually looks for tf files in that directory (rightclick on tf2 in your steam library > properties > local files > browse local files; this should open the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2" dir).
if all this doesnt help i really have no idea anymore, there might be something wrong with your windows or hdd pointing at non existing directories that tf2 interprets as non valid. thats just a rough guess tho, theres probably an easier solution to it that i just dont know...
Thanks a lot dude, he tried steps 1-3 and it fixed it for him. No idea which one specifically worked, but it's working.
Firetry deleting / moving your custom folder from the \tf\ folder to desktop for example.
also verify game cache if you havent done it yet

he's tried verifying cache/reinstalling the game completely several times
his custom directory didn't exist at all when he was getting the error, so he created an empty folder in \team fortress 2\tf\ called custom and he still can't launch the game

in pugchamp you dont decide whos coming and you dont know everyone and everyone has access to that
Basically the same yeah. You either have a steam group with a few dozen people, post an announcement, first 12 that join get to play (bad idea since no one bothers with announcements) or you just spam your friends list
Mix = you get 6 random friends, you form a 6s team and you play against someone else for a map or two
Doublemix = you get 12 people on a server, someone yells last to spec, everyone goes to spectate. Last 2 people are forced to play medic. They have an ubersaw battle on mid, winner gets to pick first, and they start taking turns picking teammates from the other 10 people in spectate, and you play a single map like that. Next map, you repeat the process except the people that played medic last time are immune
