#142 Anyone here bilingual/multilingual? in Off Topic
eeeTobeeeKind of off topic but my college advisor recommended I take Italian as my second language credit as a prereq for med school. She figures the Latin base would help with understanding medical terminology more. Is this dumb?
Might as well just do basic online Latin courses and it'll probably help more.
It'd help you understand the terminology a bit better if you decide to study Italian. Not worth it if that's the only use you'll ever have for it though. Spend less time studying actual Latin than you would studying Italian, spend the time you saved studying for med school
school doesnt teach latin :(
probably can't get into med school anyway so w/e thanks tho

Speaking as a med student, don't bother. You'll struggle with some of the terminology for a month or two but you'll get used to it easily. You don't need to know Latin, youll only be using a few dozen terms anyway (facies - face, paries - wall, radix - root, anterior - front, posterior - back, caput - head etc) and if you're American you won't even need those, as most of the terms are anglicized (for example the latin term would be ligamentum cruciatum anterius but the term that american doctors use would be anterior cruciate ligament). So yeah no worries you'll get the hang of it quickly without needing any knowledge of latin

#126 TF2Center DDosed in TF2 General Discussion
sacSomeone like yak won't go at me about retarded shit like "6s meta" in lobbies, like that idiot highclass,
The reason offclassing rules were adopted, was because the team decided that center should be a place where people have the ability to learn how competitive TF2 is usually played. There is no doubt that top level players could come into your average center lobby and play any class in the game and do extremely well, but what is learned from that? We're trying to foster an environment where people can play and learn how to play the game at a higher level, a bridge to the competitive format.
Getting beat by better, more experienced, players is inevitable, but with offclassing restrictions at least you will be able to learn and develop by seeing how these players win and take advantage of the established meta. The same cannot be said about excessive offclassing, as it is not something you will normally encounter at a high level of play.
There is something to be said for exploring the meta of TF2, and I'm always for creative and interesting new ways to play, but for now we can't justify that style of play, as we do not have the tools to moderate it, yet.
This rule is to keep players from offclassing the majority of a 6s game. Like I previously said, if there is a situation where another class is useful, you're allowed to play that class. Yes, we would warn Flippy if he full time sniped just like anyone else, skill level is not a factor.

You can't really disagree with that though. Would you scrim against a team that runs a permaspy or a permapyro? People wanna play 6s, not get stomped by some bored 8000h guy playing permapyro. There's a constructive way of losing, and there's losing to a team with 3 offclasses just because they're better than you in every way. Just because someone is new and not as good as you, it doesn't give you the right to humiliate them and toy with them. If you think you're too good to play a 6s class in a 6s lobby, then don't play lobbies. Don't ruin the experience for other people.

That being said, I don't think permasnipers should be banned if they're doing work since the past few seasons of prem have shown that sniper is a viable class in almost any situation, and it's something you have a good chance of encountering in serious games/officials so you should learn how to deal with it.

Shit like pyro or spy to mid is just aids though.

#3 Laptop in Hardware

I play tf2 with decent frames (80-120) on an i3 laptop with an integrated GPU.

So you shouldn't be worried about running games like Isaac. You can play them on pretty much anything

#7 How to fix no round timers on custom huds in Q/A Help
Walnut-You can go into tf2_misc_dir.vpk inside the tf2 tf folder and search for hudmatchstatus.res and use that or get it from rayshud or flamehud or another updated hud.

It's fine it worked. I was testing it on a pub and it didnt work there. Its fine on tournament servers though :) thanks a lot

SleepingLifeessay

I completely agree with everything that you said. Pocket is the easiest position to get amazing stats on in low level games. Speaking as a person that doesnt main solly and therefore has absolutely no jumping skills and no DM on soldier, when I'm playing pocket against open dudes, all you have to do is shoot the ground in front of you and you get 400 dpm.

Another problem that I've noticed, in europe at least, is the fact that roamers in low levels essentially play pocket #2. 20% heals, stand in choke with the med, spam, ez 300 dpm.

Idunno, I guess medics in lower levels are just really biased towards healing soldiers (doesn't matter if it's the pocket or the roamer) and as long as those soldiers keep getting amazing stats, they'll think that they're great and that they don't need to change anything about their playstyle.

#3 Massive ping issues in Q/A Help
augustDealing with bad internet is a huge pain in the ass, just try and fix it methodically. Since your modem looks like its working fine, let's try a top down (game -> computer -> internet) method.

Figure out what you're dealing with with net_graph 4. Make note of it, whether it's choke, packet loss, jitter, or simply high ping.
  • Make sure your network config is right. Comanglia's or b4nny's works well. Put it in your autoexec and restart. I've heard of people who accidentally set their lerp to 400 ms and wonder why everything is so weird.
  • Try resetting the game: Get rid of your tf/custom, tf/cfg, and boot up the game with -autoconfig. Try playing some pubs. If that works, do "host_writeconfig configname full" to save it to your tf/cfg folder, then spit it in your autoexec.
  • Do the same with -default.
  • There's not much else the game could be screwing up, so call your ISP.

I've been using the same cfg and network configs for about a year now, I haven't changed anything recently

Also yeah, net graph doesn't show any choke or packet loss, it's just abnormally high ping... I guess I'll try calling my ISP. Thanks for your help

#1 Massive ping issues in Q/A Help

For the past 2 weeks or so, I've had massive ping issues on tf2. Normally, I have around 50-70 ping on EU servers but right now it's really unstable, constantly bouncing between 70 and 400ms. The game is literally unplayable.

My download and upload speed are fine (tested with speedtest.net, I get exactly what I'm paying for, I can watch streams in source quality with no loading etc).

My ping, measured with pingtest.net is also fine (50-ish to german servers, 60-ish to UK servers with only 2-3ms jitter).

Net_graph ingame shows no packet loss or anything like that (I can provide a screenshot if needed).

I'm not playing on WiFi, I'm using an ethernet cable directly connected to the modem.

I have unstable ping both on serveme.tf servers (not just 1 host, pretty much on every one of their hosts) and on pubs.

So what the hell is the problem? Please help me before I shoot myself...

#1 Completely justified bans thread in TF2 General Discussion

EDIT: Ban appeal was accepted, got my ban reduced. Tbh, the majority of the tf2c staff are good people

Let's see the funniest/most bizarre bans you've gotten on TF2 related websites. I'll start, pasting my tf2center unban request

"#669082 refusing to rep an AFK player; then repping yourself ultimately leading to EXCESSIVE_SUBS"

I was on the team of the aforementioned player and Masternoob was on the other team. The game hadn't started, we were still in pregame.

The player wasn't afk. Their PC crashed and they were reconnecting. It was a mumble required lobby and all of us agreed in mumble not to rep them, just give them a minute to connect. Masternoob joined our mumble, started counting down from 20 to 0 and then banned that player from tf2center even though they were almost connected (sending client info).

So what's more important, a decision reached by our entire team (and the other team since no one apart from Masternoob asked us to report the player) or the whim of an admin that can't wait for 2 minutes and decides to abuse his power?

After the player got banned for no reason whatsoever, I reported myself because I lost the desire to play.

Others reported themselves too, and we all got banned.

I fail to see how reporting oneself is a bannable offence.

Furthermore, where do you have a rule that says that if a player is taking too long to connect because of an old/slow PC they deserve to be banned by an admin?

#40 The Future of ESEA Invite in TF2 General Discussion

Do you have a link? I tried looking for it on youtube but i cant find it

emkayI agree, Sentinel. I didn't mean to word it such that your criticism wasn't true - I should have emphasized it as "at least we don't have a lack of clarity". Sorry if I came off as aggressive or trying to put your thought down!

It's alright, i wasn't trying to be aggressive either, it's just that neutral statements can sometimes come across as passive aggressive in text :)

Anyway another thing I forgot to add was, the reason I think sideshow and gecks work amazingly together is because they complement each other's style. Gecks focuses on present events, calling out frags and other events, whereas Sideshow offers a more analytical retrospective input (explaining why a push failed, calling out bad positioning or overextension from certain players that hurts their team etc). I think that, for important games at least such as finals or LAN games the organizers should strive to have 2 casters with complementing styles like that. One calling out the current flow of the game and another (an top player) offering a more in depth analysis of what's happening. It really works magically.

emkaySentinelgeckssnipThat being said, I've noticed that you often use contorted phrases like "he caps the point, stark does" or something along those lines (i cant remember the exact type of phrasing since it's been months since I've seen you cast, but it's something similar to the example i provided and you use it relatively often). It's not a big deal, I'm just pointing it out since you mentioned that you wanted to iron out your flaws.
I don't think that is an issue. Saying "Stark" at the end clarifies who Gecks is talking about.
If it was simply "he caps the point", some viewers might be saying "who is 'he'?".

Obviously this is a moot point if you've watched the game for a while - you can read the killfeed to see who capped - but it is still helpful for an audio context.

I think Gecks, truk, getawhale, etc explain things (including that type of clarification) really well - specifying which team during a sentence instead of "they are pushing"/"they cap it off" helps a lot.

I was talking about the actual phrasing "they win the round, nerdrage do" instead of simply "nerdrage win the round".
Anyway I'll stop talking about this since it's a very minor thing and having a huge discussion over it is pointless

#43 I don't know in Videos
gecksThe truth of the matter is that nearly every caster has words or phrases they say too much. As for myself, I say "here" far too often, as well as "they haven't found anything" or some variation of that when a team pops uber into the other team and doesn't do all that much with it, or when a player goes in for an unsuccessful sac play, etc. I generally also use a lot of the same adjectives to describe things. There are a bunch more I could list off that I've noted after analyzing my casts, but I think you get the point.

Taking a play out of Redeye's book, I just recently started to tape note cards to my monitor, each one having various words or phrases to describe a certain type of situation that typically occurs in a match. I'm still getting used to remembering to look up at the notes, as I often forget I have them there. But they help a lot when I do remember. Once I use them enough they'll hopefully become a part of my regular vocabulary and won't need the notes anymore.

I'm sure the video was just meant to be a joke, but I know how much it can suck to see these kind of things about yourself as a caster. Don't feel bad guys, everyone really appreciates the work you put in. I think it's best to just take it as a learning experience.

Gecks you're probably my No2 favorite caster in the history of TF2, watching you and Sideshow cast together at i55 was amazing.

That being said, I've noticed that you often use contorted phrases like "he caps the point, stark does" or something along those lines (i cant remember the exact type of phrasing since it's been months since I've seen you cast, but it's something similar to the example i provided and you use it relatively often). #28 I'm top damaging/fragging as roamer. in Q/A Help

I see this happen with a lot of new roamers, where you get a ton of heals and top frag/dmg. That's not the point of roamer though, you need to be helping your scout hold the flank. If you're sitting with the combo and soaking up a ton of heals, sure you'll have great stats but your scout is going to have a hell of a time alone on the flanks. And if he gets picked off (which can easily happen, as you're essentially forcing him into a 2v1 position), that leaves your team wide open for flanking sollies/scouts.

So yeah as a lot of people have said, the points dont matter. You need to be playing your role

edit: Another thing you should be doing is jumping in on mids or in teamfights, to create space, do damage or just draw attention to yourself. This isn't a glorified role since it'll often lead to your death, but it gives your team a huge advantage. Those few seconds where everyone on the enemy team is looking at you and trying to pick you off are seconds your team can use to move forward and crush some nerds
