#8 the players at i32 were the best in the world once in The Dumpster
GetawhaleI hope this doesn't turn into a shitposting thread, because I think you make an interesting point

The world, and history, is full of situations where people said "Nobody will ever be able to top this." Records which were thought unbeatable, beaten. In sports, video games, speed-running, all over the place.

And so it might be motivational for some up and comers (and maybe the less cynical veterans) to remember that. In 2007/08, folks that were Quake/TFC veterans or whatever may have possibly thought "We are the pinnacle, we are the best. We've put in tons of work, and folks will never top what we do" etc, and that seems funny to look back at now.

I think we do understand the various skill ceilings a lot better these days, especially after 10 years, and we've picked through the game code about as thoroughly as possible, but never say never - in a few more years, we may find it funny to look back and see that one player dominated the NA scene for 3-4 years in a row.

an interesting watch on this topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8COaMKbNrX0

#12 Star Wars 8 [spoilers] in Music, Movies, TV

Thinks I loved:

Show Content
  • Binary Sunset bookending Luke
  • The lightspeed collision scene
  • Rey and Kylo fighting in the Throne Room, the lightsaber-ignition-in-face got an "ooooooooh" from the theatre
  • The visuals in general
  • "Do you have something you could put on?" and their force-bond scenes in general
  • Hux being turned into a running gag
  • Luke drinking weird milk
  • Luke channelling Han and trolling Kylo at the end
  • Yoda being a sassy little fucker and cackling after he zapped the tree.
  • "There is nothing in that tree Rey does not already have" - then you see the books in the Falcon at the end
  • The film generally not being afraid to do different stuff

Things I did not love:

Show Content
  • Casino planet / that subplot in general
  • Captain Phasma's criminal underuse
  • SuperLeia - I like her having force powers, but this looked terrible, and I thought it would have been a good way for her to die. I also saw some good suggestions on Reddit like having her push Ackbar back into the ship or not showing powers there and instead using them to inspire allies from across the galaxy to help at the end.
  • The fact that the last half-hour of the movie wasn't a Finn/Poe romcom.

#9 Should I go to Uni in Off Topic

Note that at Scottish unis (particularly true for St Andrews, not entirely sure about others) you can often switch degree intentions in your first two years because of the four year structure. For example, I could have switched from maths to CS after first year, and I was on a course that was more rigid than most, and I have a friend who switched from maths and astrophysics to maths (I think after third year?). It's actually fairly common.

#20 How can we improve camerawork during matches? in TF2 General Discussion
corsastuff

I generally agree with what you say, just a few things (and I promise that even though some of them look like leading questions, they are genuine things that I'm thinking about):

  • if you saw the use of split screen to show the product forward hold, what did you think about that? Would you have preferred that as PiP?
  • some related questions: do you think that you might want different things from an observer than a less experienced player would? Since you understand what the whole team is likely to be doing, do you think that makes you want to watch individual players more? I've heard several times that tf2 is confusing to spectate, do you think that spectating/casting single players more in stalemates would make it more or less so?
  • how do you think we should balance PiP and main camera for players behind? I've found that often when I spectate the player behind things like uber exchanges happen offscreen - do you think it's worth it?

Cheers,
Sim

I'm following this thread with interest - I think I know what I needed to do better, but others might have a better idea from watching the stream.

#22 Trombone player anyone? in Off Topic
Swennbass clef>every other clef
i play bass and trombone

As a trombonist, I have so many complaints about clefs.

When I played the alto trombone part for Dvorak 9, the sheet music switched regularly between alto and tenor clef, sometimes twice within a single line.
Last year I was supposed sight-read a piece at a brass band concert. I was given music that was bass clef in F.
Similarly, being given brass band treble clef Bb music is fucking annoying.
I've had music in alto clef where entire passages are 3-4 ledger lines below the stave.

ok rant done
