#17 Nostalgia thread in Off Topic

yo this game was just so variable??

it was like world of warcraft, or something, with all these different worlds, except the whole thing is just this amazing collection of various mods

you can pub, you can join the dm server and get pooped on by delpo, you could pug with the weirdos, you could do the JUMP SERVERS??? what the fuck?? or the weird ass trade servers? c'mon. the RANGE was impeccable.

humanity will never again see a game so weird, so fun, and so extensive as TF2

and the status hierarchies lol, what a mess

#16 Question for people who quit TF2 in Off Topic

Has your life improved since you quit?
yes, purely because school is great

Do you get bored enough to feel the urge to come back to TF2 often, or are you satisfied enough with where you are (or dissatisfied enough with TF2 when you left) to not even consider it?
often, but I don't have time to play ESEA so I don't feel much urge to play seriously to improve

Did you have some other, non-videogame hobby to spend your time on, or did you exit into the world with no clear plans for what to do next?
school

What was the main reason that you decided to quit TF2?
still school :(

And, of course, why do you browse a forum for a game you no longer play?
because I secretly wish I had time to play again

#17 I'm plateauing in Q/A Help

hours don't really mean much, it depends where those hours are played. justin has like 2k hours iirc, but near 100% of them are scrims and matches because he immediately started competitive

edit: OP, the best way to improve is to play ESEA. scrims and matches with a consistent team has an amazing effect on your gameplay

#3 Newbie Mixes over the next few weeks in TF2 General Discussion

I'll be there to coach next week, even if it's later in the night.

I've seen at least one player I coached a long time ago playing in IM. That's pretty cool, and for me makes coaching as much as possible extremely worth it. Glad to see these are still going, too. Keep it up Kevin!

#69 Newbie Mix Coaches in TF2 General Discussion

Nah Marxist, you right. I suppose I can't speak for how Kevin wants things done in NM anymore, but the way generally should work is newbies "graduate" after like 3-6 weeks of playing mixes. That graduation isn't from playing open or even because they've learned all they can from mixes.

A significant problem with comp TF2 is how disconnected it is from pub play. This makes it really really hard for a casual player to make the jump to comp, as it's a totally different game than what they've been playing. Newbie mixes help pub players learn the very basics of the game, while also making friends that they can continue to play comp with. Newbie mixes (hopefully) gives new players the chops to kick it in #tf2mix (whatever the equivalent to that is rn) or newbie PUGs. After they've got their first pair of comp shoes, it's best they move on, because they've reached the level of diminishing returns where they can learn a LOT more by playing elsewhere.

@ZooeyG, newbie mixes won't help you improve the way you want it to. I'd recommend playing in newbie PUGs or whatever the popular PUG system is right now that isn't TF2C

valkeri is a great guy and a great gamer. he improved really quickly when he played regularly and will undoubtedly continue to do so given the chance. dude deserves an IM team, not a high open one
