#221 Watch: College Kids idea of identity in The Dumpster

Been away from this thread for a while, but I'd just like to echo that I agree with almost everything hooli's been posting.

I'm starting to notice an interesting trend.

We have some obvious liberals and then some people that fall more on the conservative side of the political spectrum (at least in regards to this subject). When a liberal disagrees with a conservative poster often times there are some direct attacks and name calling. Such as "you're an idiot" or "you have no brain" or "you are a retard."

Conservatives are labeled as being intolerant racists bigots for not accepting that being transsexual is not normal and doesn't require any mental treatment or therapy. The same liberals however are ironically being intolerant for not accepting that someone else may have a varying opinion on the subject and a varying idea on how to treat the individual. The liberals want to ban people and tell them to stop posting when the post a valid argument which they are unable to refute in many cases.

Most liberals in this thread seem to feel that everyone should have the freedom to do whatever they want to their bodies and behave however they want "as long as it doesn't hurt anyone". If that means identifying as a straight individual or as a dragon lady, or a blind person with no legs (because they cut them off) its all good and they don't need any psychological treatment. I mean its not like a 52 year old man identifying as a 6 year old girl, in girls bathroom at an elementary school could be considered a problem by the kids or parents.... (/sarcasm). Do you see how tolerance of accepting a 52 year old man as a 6 year old girl, could lead to quite a big problem in some environments? You have to look at both sides of the coin. Sure if that 52 year old man that thinks he is a 6 year old girl lives in an isolated environment, no one would really care about how he acts or behaves or what restroom he enters. But when the individual enters normal society and expects everyone to bend over backwards to accommodate his needs at their expense, it becomes a problem.

#19 ban this retard in Site Discussion

He needs a time out at least. That was like 10-15 posts in a row with nothing but a flood of random spam links.

I do not however support banning people for having a difference of opinion like in the other thread.

owli have black friends too

Good, but its kind of hard to be a racist when 99% of the people surrounding you are from a different culture/race.

mustardoverlordto be fair, it'd be weird to ban sheepy and not ban all the other blatantly racist people around here- $layer, Red_, SpaceCadet, and Forefather immediately come to mind

Mustard you should really handle yourself in a more mature manner. Literally almost every one of your posts throws around a direct personal attack. Why not focus purely on the text of someones posts, rather than throwing around personal insults.

That's interesting that I'm considered racist by you because I have varying political opinions. I'm probably one of the least racist people here. I've spent most of my life overseas surrounded by people of different cultures. I have RL friends and family members scattered all over the globe.

mustardoverlordMaybe the reason it's being reclassified is that it's not a disorder? Did you ever consider that???

If its not a disorder then why is it being treated with an antipsychotic drug often used to treat other delusional and paranoia disorders? Please look up Pimozide.

Also even if we go with the term "Gender Dysphoria" it still is a mental issue.

dys·pho·ri·a
noun
a state of unease or generalized dissatisfaction with life.

"Dissatisfaction with life"... hmm sounds kind of like depression which is a mental disorder.

saturn_dollarlayerharvestwhere those credible sources at tho
Literally just google Gender Identity disorder. Last I checked a disorder refers to a treatable mental illness.

The actual source I was talking about which talked about it being closely related to anorexic people I can not locate. I randomly stumbled upon it a couple weeks ago and didn't bookmark it. If I find it I will post it.
"gender identity disorder" was reclassified as gender dysphoria under the DSM-V, just as an fyi.

It really doesn't matter what one organization reclassifies something as. GID is still a widely used and accepted term in the medical community. You can reclassify anything and say an apple is now a banana. But the fact still remains that it is still a widely accepted and used term, and a disorder is a treatable mental condition.

Look at hoolis above post for one way of treating the issue. I believe that drug was mentioned in the article that I read a couple weeks ago.

hoolifatswimdudei hope youre not trying to say that gender dysphoria isnt real because a few people misdiagnosed themselves Of course it's real but it is a treatable condition that doesn't have to involve hormones and sex reassignment surgery which can actually make the condition worse and can potential lead to suicide.

I agree. Many physiologists have already concluded that gender identity problems are psychological problems that are treatable through physiological help. They fall into the same category as anorexic people that still feel that they are fat but are actually dangerously thin.

JarateKingcollege application doesn't care if you were born with a dick or not; they're not asking for your biological sex. Why is this at all an issue?

So when you get to your college on day one, are assigned a roommate, a biological female and you are biologically male but self identify as a female, no ones going to have a problem with it? Interesting.

fatswimdudei think any major identity change should be accompanied by psychological help

So to clarify, if someone is a male but is starting to identify as a women, they should seek psychological help?

Or only if they want to also identify as a different age (e.g. 6 year old girl) should they seek help?

fatswimdude because under the modern definition gender is not based on anything physical

There are varying definitions of gender out there on the internet. The oxford dictionary definition can be found here.

It seems to point towards biological differences in sex, male and female.

But I guess what you are suggesting is that society is shifting over the definition of gender to mean gender identity rather than sex? As a society is there a push to allow people to only determine their own gender identity or are we allowing people to determine their own biological sex (without undergoing surgeries and sex changes).

Are the definitions of male and female no longer tied to biological differences, but now tied to identity differences?

fatswimdude i mean obviously this person is dealing with issues in life, and they might not be dealing with it in the healthiest way but just telling them theyre wrong isnt a solution either. not sure what you mean by "should we accept them" though, no problem with letting them live their life unless you have a better solution for their issues

I should have been a bit more clear with my "should we accept them." By that I'm not talking about throwing them out into the streets and mocking them, I'm more talking about should that be considered acceptable by society and encouraged, or should society encourage this individual to obtain psychological help.

In my above example if a white man grew up in a remote village in China and he also identifies as a women, on his college application would he put Chinese and female?

fahrenheitI believe choosing your gender is fine, doesn't matter.
I do not believe you get to just choose your biological constructs like height, sex, or race.

I know a lot of people probably share your views but I'm curious as to why someone can chose their gender but not race?

What if that man in the video literally grew up in a small village in China where he spent the first 20 years of his life living with Chinese and he identified himself as a person of that Chinese tribe. He also identifies as a women.

Also I find it funny that if an individual of Chinese descent in an interview said they were American, no one would bat an eye, but when a white man says he is Chinese that raises eyebrows? Double Standard?

Should society accept this 52 year old father that identifies as a 6 year old girl? http://www.mediaite.com/online/meet-the-52-year-old-father-who-identifies-a-6-year-old-girl/

I stumbled upon this and I found it quite shocking. Check out the video clip in the link below.

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/434158/watch-college-kids-cant-explain-why-short-white-man-isnt-tall-asian-woman

What do you guys think, should everyone be able to pick their gender, race, age, height etc? Or should we take a more scientific approach to the classification of individuals?

#22 Traffic ticket? in Off Topic
Geel9You should learn how to speed correctly. In Ohio, you can't get points on your license for going less than 10 over in a 55+ zone, so I always just go 9 over (when safe to do so obviously). Cops are less likely to give a shit.

My cousin is a police officer and told me that the cops in his area have a saying. "5 you're fine, 10 you're mine."

They generally ignore anyone doing <10mph over the speed limit.

IMO though you should probably verify your speed with a GPS or something before assuming that whats on your dashboard is correct. Some cars can be off by up to ~3% or so. Depends on tire size and wear also.

samjain98I got pulled over for being about 15 mph above the speed limit. The officer comes over and tells me that I'm going way too fast, and asks for my license. He then asks for my registration, looks at it, then gives it back. He went back to his car with my license and came back and told me to make sure everyone in the car was wearing their seatbelt.

He didn't give me any paper or mention anything remotely about punishment. Should I expect a ticket in the mail?

In my experience they always hand you an actual ticket then you get a letter in the mail to follow up on that. So the fact that he didn't give you a ticket might mean your state is different than mine, or maybe you won't get one?

Traffic stops are one of the ways cops catch other criminals like those with warrants or suspended licenses. It's possible he was using the speeding as a valid excuse to pull you over in hopes that he might find more when he ran your ID.

If you do get a ticket in the mail you could try to contest in in court and hope the cop doesn't show up and the case is thrown out. Happens quite a bit.
