#7 Need advice on what living situation I should pick in Off Topic

I lived in a dorm years 1 & 2, then I was an RA (with my own room) year 3, and offcampus apartment with 3 roommates year 4.

I have to say for earlier years (especially freshman year) you do NOT want to overly isolate yourself by living in your own apartment. These are the years to get to know people, make friend groups, do those dorky events on campus just to get out of your room and talking to others.

I was lucky in that both of my roommates year 1 went home for 4-5 days a week EVERY week, so I had a ton of alone time even while having a roommate. If you can find that, it's ideal.

Option 2 is probably the best, but it's also usually expensive so that's really up to you to determine if you can afford that choice.

#11 Rosie Med? in Recruitment (looking for team)

When someone is very new, you'll get people who want to meme and people who want to help. It's pretty representative of the community as a whole :)

We're in the middle of a season right now (week 2-3), so it's a good time to look to back up for a team as a substitute until a potential spot opens. Generally, these forums are used for people looking for teams with the ESEA league which is 6v6 pay-to-play, so make sure you're able and willing to pay those fees. If not, also check out http://www.ugcleague.net/forum/ and post a LFT there looking for backup on a Steel team, which is a free league. You can play either/both, especially as a backup.

Good luck!

#6 Who are you supposed to build with? in TF2 General Discussion

Generally scouts should be building, however in certain circumstances you'll want to pocket build with escape plan. Some times where it's preferential for pocket would be (not a complete list!):

  • Highlander offclass defense with no scouts
  • Enclosed, easily spamable areas where a scout building could easily be killed
  • Expected sacks where you want both scouts to be healthy enough to deny bombers/etc.

Arrow building should also be built in to your team's plan as well, particularly at a moderate disadvantage (40%) or trying to build up a small advantage into a large one to push. We sometimes use demo to arrow build if he doesn't need to deny any areas, since both of our soldiers are gunboats.

#111 what do ya'll do outside of tf2? in Off Topic

work - emergency medicine research
friends - gym, go to wineries, eat good food
personal - read a ton (biopsych, dystopian), taking computer science classes for fun/teaching myself SQL, starting to really research how to build a PC (starting once I get my tax refund!), watching trash TV like the bachelor to keep myself sane :)

#12 Worth Playing Open? in TF2 General Discussion

Personal anecdote: before I ever played competitive in a league and was just learning comp through lobbies (lol) someone tried to pick me up as medic for their open team. At the time, I was playing lobbies with the desire to find a UGC HL team the following season, since I had read that HL was easier than 6s for pub players like myself.

I was thrown into a 5 night a week scrim schedule and team fights without realizing it was going to be for a paid league, with zero clue how to play 6s. I backed out pretty quickly, but tbh if I would have accepted that spot, I would have learned A TON. Instead, I formed a HL team and played HL for 4 seasons before switching to ESEA.

In the end, what really mattered was how much time I was willing to commit and if I found people I wanted to play with. That's really what it comes down to - you want to improve, do you want to play 2 nights a week? 7 nights a week? Do you know anyone who plays comp already that you might be able to join a team with or learn from?

UGC in the lower level divisions (iron->silver) still take playing 6s pretty seriously. They scrim, albeit significantly less than ESEA teams usually, and there's one match a week. ESEA low open is at the same level, but the teams mostly scrim 5 nights a week with two matches a week, a significantly larger commitment.

If you want to learn fast, develop your skills fast, and start your ESEA career, then join an open team. If you'd rather dip your toes first, try UGC.

#25 Weapon Switching in TF2 General Discussion

Scroll wheel -
Up = primary
Down = secondary
Press = melee

1,2,3

I use a combination - I always press 2 to switch back to medigun, for instance, but scrollwheel for crossbow/ubersaw. I would love a new melee bind,, I've found that occasionally when switching to melee I accidentally scroll up/down and this weird thing happens where melee is out/away/out/shit I'm dead

#26 Seeking sponsor for ESEA Invite in TF2 General Discussion
msell ur freemium slots, do 5 dollar weekly demo reviews, mow a couple lawns, theres a ton of ways to scrounge whatever the difference u need

I think things like this could be really helpful for both the community & the team - depending on what your team is comfortable with, you could let someone spectate a scrim night/sit in mumble muted&deafened for like $5, demo reviews, mentoring discussions, whatever it might be - teach people who are eager to learn while also helping fund your team for this season/future seasons.

I'd also donate some $$ for teams who want to play invite but can't pay the fees personally, a TFTV crowdfund could be legit.

#13 LFP IM Scout & Demo in Recruitment (looking for players)

We'd love a dedicated scout sub that would be playing with us probably once a week, including some potential matches.

Let us know if you'd be interested, preferably we'd have played with you/know you!
