Thanks to everyone's feedback Monthly Challenge cups will be using the Swiss system for the qualifiers, which is a mix of both SE and DE but also has its cons. You're eliminated after 2 losses. You will play every round with a similar skill leveled opponent to yours. The team with the most wins at the end of the cup will be crowned winner. This is good for time periods (cup takes ~4.5-6h with 17+ teams) but doesn't have a grandfinal unlike the above two - More details here: https://play.eslgaming.com/swiss-cup-faq
The Monthly Final will be played as a single elimination bracket with the top eight teams from the previous weeks, with the winner of each month taking home the prestigious ESL medal!
Other Regions and staff
I have been working on getting more regions supported by ESL. This however has been a challenge as ESL cannot take any staff from US due to laws over there. If you live elsewhere and are interested in volunteering as an ESL Referee, we are now taking applications! Apply here if you're interested.
For people new to ESL Play, here's a quick guide on how to signup to the cup: https://play.eslgaming.com/guide.
Live support will be provided during the event via this Discord: https://discord.gg/ESLTF2

PeteIt didn't take them much resources to add TF2 to the CS ESEA LAN. But when ESEA signed with ESL to host their top division playoffs, there was no way ESL was gonna host a large scale TF2 tourney.
carterwell ya esl wasnt gonna host tf2 because it wasnt profitable
it wasn't profitable cause ESL is a european company, hence why ESEA is still doing all the work in NA. It is still 'possible' for one of the parties to start a LAN, but it entirely depends on how many people are playing the league/cup.
sigafooEven had the FaceIt CEO(?) posting on twitter about how it was their most popular game, iirc.
mmm FACEIT must be having a bad year then :')

AshJurIn an ideal world, players would play for the fun of playing, even with knowing of better teams participating. But I dunno if people wanna give up every sunday afternoon of a month without much incentive when they could just go pug or mix. This is just based on my personal experience but I don't really think anyone's that bothered about 'prestigous medals' in TF2 much when you can just go roster ride and collect them... Giving them out won't noticeably devalue the medal because it probably won't have that much value to begin with.
Still, I hope this goes well and has a great turnout, then hopefully ESL will give us an actual League with a prizepool..
So, LFT Med lol
Thanks for your feedback. Just to clear up, roster riding is not possible and all players on roster must play in one entire match for them to receive a medal, we will add these rules into the rule book to make it clear.
We can quite easily start a league now, as other ESL Play games are, but ESL doesn't want to clash with ETF2L so we would need a strong calling for it to happen.
As mentioned in our original post, ESL won't be able to provide their own prize pool unless we see a consistent 50 - 100 teams playing in our events. If we see those numbers we can definitely accommodate a prize pool for a league and possible future Pro events.
jnkionly the first place in the Monthly gets medals though? not even the 2nd and 3rd place, let alone monthly finals participants
this kinda is underwhelming because monthly is up for the grabs for the highest ranked etf2l prem team to join
Unfortunately yes but that's why we have a leaderboard. If premier teams really want the medal, they have to be playing every week to reach the top eight. I understand this isn't great for all teams but we didn't want to devalue the medal by releasing it to everyone.
