#133 "Matchmaking will fail" - Muselk in TF2 General Discussion
GentlemanJonsnip

lol, or maybe matchmaking is in a shitty state and has been sitting here in beta with no updates for months and he's annoyed by it, as is the case with a LOT of people? no need to overanalyse dude

KissakalaThis thread is everything why TF2 as an esport won't ever happen.

100% agreed

fahrenheityou have to be really dense if you don't think muselk's exponential growth in popularity wasnt because star gradually stopped making tf2 content altogether and people wanted more of that humor

what? star's last tf2 vid was literally 8 months ago. starting in april is when muselks sub + video counts started skyrocketing. this is well after it became evident that star moved on from tf2.

fahrenheithe basically lived in star's wake

this isn't even a relevant point to make anyway. when star actually made tf2 vids semi frequently and wasn't clearly unhappy with the game/the videos he made, yes, muselk was in his shadow. this was like two years ago. muselk is more popular and "relevant" now than he ever was, like it or not.

fahrenheitstar halted production of tf2 videos because he doesnt like how vapid the content is

it seemed more like he stopped making tf2 vids because he doesn't really like the game very much anymore.

#98 "Matchmaking will fail" - Muselk in TF2 General Discussion

remember when muselk made a guide to competitive tf2 to expose his large subscriber base to the nuances of it and help people transition to it?

remember when muselk previewed matchmaking to provide exposure to it, as well as providing feedback and overall positively reflecting on it? remember when he used the description of that video to spoonfeed comp tf2 leagues so that people have an easier time getting into it?

it's almost like he's gradually become more and more displeased with matchmaking and how valve are handling it (as many tf2 players have) and has grown cynical as a result. getting so worked up just because he's in a position where his negative opinion will be seen and heard by a lot of people is pretty pathetic. also that tweet and his reddit post comparatively have very little exposure compared to the videos he's made about matchmaking and comp tf2 praising and endorsing each of them.

this isn't worth 100 posts of people frothing at their mouths and shitting on the guy. he's had an extremely consistent and rapid growth of subscribers since april and makes both tf2 and overwatch videos, so why get mad and act like he's "not relevant" anymore? i don't even like the guy, but his channel is growing very rapidly, don't act like he's washed up and trying to remain relevant. he doesn't need a tweet and a reddit comment with 20 upvotes to continue gaining 40 to 50k subs every week.

e: i just saw b4nny's tweet where he simply said "it's too early to call" which is a statement that i find agreeable and suitably reserved. meanwhile the overly defensive virtriol in this thread is borderline hilarious

e2: "he's still living a hundred miles into STAR_'s shadow"

this is also particularly hilarious because he's like half a week away from surpassing star's sub count at this rate, and muselk actually still makes tf2 videos unlike star. muselk's vids are shit and i enjoy star's channel a lot, but he's not in anyone's shadow.

#16 Blizzard statement on Overwatch cheating in Esports

@dizasta comin in hot w/ the "overwatch is such an easy game why bother cheating heh" meme

For real though, good message that came at a good time. People are freaking out over "hacks" right now (because the general playerbase for this game is comprised of mostly bad fps players if I had to hedge a guess) so it's good that Blizzard not only said "We're listening" but also "Chill the fuck out and stop using PotG footage as proof and jumping down peoples' throats for it", cuz holy shit that's been happening way too much.

On a related note, hype for the fat open beta numbers. I think 9.7 million is even bigger than Star Wars Battlefront's numbers, so that's all very exciting news.

SkittlesBTspeaking of ults, i'm not sure i like how the game refunds ults if you die during them, like if as pharah you decide to use your ult really shittily and die right away you shouldn't get 50% back or whatever, it makes using an ultimate relatively low risk compared to how large the reward can be

I think this depends on the ult. I swear when I ult as Roadhog and instantly die it just stays at 0% and it's a wasted ult, but McCree will refund 50 if you cancel it and there are other heroes that refund. I'm not a fan of ult refunding in any case. It's all well and good for the person ulting, but it's annoying seeing an enemy McCree time his ult like shit then cancel it and walk away only to know that he'll get it again in like 5 shots.

chftthere is great satisfaction for using yours well or shutting down an enemy one.

I can't stress enough how good it feels to shutdown an ult. Ice walling an ulting S76 so that he literally can't shoot anything, picking off a Pharah from the skies, shooting a tire just before it gets too close, that shit is so good. Once as Roadhog I hooked a Tracer back to me after she stuck me with her ult and took her with me. I wish there was a "Shutdown" voice line or something. The POTG will recognize ult shutdowns so it seems like the game can recognize when an ult is interrupted in some way, so it would be cool if killing a person mid ult got a feel-good voice clip played for you.

The only ults that aren't fun to play against are ones that you can't "stop", like Widow's wallhacks or any of the healers' ults. Anything you can dodge or interrupt is a-okay in my book.

KaeyelOff topic, but does anyone have a list of ex-TF2 Overwatch streams besides Seagull/Clockworks' ?

Not necessarily ex-TF2 and they may not stream the final game but I saw the following stream during the open beta: Pharaoh, dummy, sigafoo, stabby, PYYYOUR, blindpyro, and foxpeace. Obviously there's Star and Jerma if you're into them. Sorry to anyone browsing this thread whose name I just listed who isn't planning on streaming Overwatch when it comes out. I just wanted to give names of people who I saw stream the open beta a decent amount.

ChompsI think that everyone who says "its a braindead game dm wise" is kinda calling that a little early.

Personally it just makes me think of a Quake player playing TF2 on launch and thinking it's too easy and doesn't have nuanced movement mechanics. Maybe it's less nuanced than Quake overall, but taking it at face value after 20 hours of playing isn't fair as that isn't enough time for 1) nuanced movement mechanics to be discovered at all 2) to be exposed to those mechanics or 3) to learn/master them. Similarly, I think Overwatch is probably ultimately less mechanically intensive as TF2, but like you said, I think people are calling it way too early on the dm and movement being totally braindead simple with no nuance at all.

What does concern me a bit is just how much time it takes for a player to "master" a class. Even Genji, arguably the toughest character mechanically, seems to have already been mastered by players like Seagull, and the game literally isn't even out yet. Again, it's too early to call because who knows what discoveries will be made in the future, but some skill ceilings really feel like they've already been reached by players.

e: Chiming in to say that I agree with fatswimdude; people who write off the game with very vague statements like "lol game gives you hacks 0/10" are overly dismissive. Those are the only two heroes in the game whose ults act remotely like a hack out of a total twenty-one and it seems pretty brash to completely write the game off with a blanket criticism like that.

I'd argue that it's more just the fact that 76 and Widow have the laziest fucking ults design wise rather than it being that they're too strong or unfair or something. His ult is fine balance wise; like you said, almost every ult in the game is cheese to an extent and is reliant on positioning/health/etc. of both the person ulting and his/her targets. With 76, you'll generally only die to it if you're lit or a squishy. Anyone else has ample time to drop his shit, and stuff like Reinheardt/Winston shields, Mei's ice wall, Roadhog's hook, and Junkrat's bomb can block or interrupt his ult. There really are no problems with it balance wise, it's just fundamentally lazy as fuck and I wish they thought of something more original and interesting for him and Widow.

I don't hear people complain much about other ults except Mei's and Hanzo's (which are both pretty mediocre, dunno why people moan about them) but 76 and Widow catch shit because the actual design behind the ult is the antithesis of skill based first person shooter dude-shooting. I personally don't give a shit but I understand when someone who takes fps's pretty seriously and likes them to be fairly skill indexed is irritated that two characters in the game have ults that give them a few seconds of actual cheats.

#58 Thoughts on Overwatch? in Other Games

Exceptionally well made game, and easily the best casual shooter on the market right now. Extremely well polished, fantastic balance, tremendously well optimized, and a refreshing take on the class based shooter.

Not entirely sold on it being competitively viable; it has small issues than can be fixed but it's fundamentally too mechanically simple to ever be taken seriously by hardcore fps players. But if Blizzard wants it to be an esport then it will be an esport. All it takes is fat prize pools.

Some reponses itt are predictably making comparisons to TF2 which continues to be a stupid thing to do. If I didn't know any better I'd think I was reading /r/tf2 posts. A person couldn't even get away with saying "I like it more than tf2" without getting - frags for his hot opinion. I think even reddit would upvote at least one comment saying that to facilitate discussion a little.
