#66 Team Fortress 2 Welcomes Linux in TF2 General Discussion
milehighmilitiaperformance in ubuntu seems inconsistent at best. every once in a while my fps would drop to ~40 which is terrible. This will probably get better as the drivers become more and more commonly supported, but at this point i dont think linux is a viable option for competitive gaming.

I only have that issue when I very first go into a server, I'm guessing its because its still "loading" parts of the game, because my install is on a "normal" slow hard drive.

Outside of that, I've not had this issue what so ever.

PizzaAnyone else getting the problem of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS not booting and just leading you to the GRUB cmd prompt?

I've had this problem before. This along with a couple massive driver fuckups drove me to Linux Mint. GL.

PapaSmurf323ScrewballNow all we need is a Linux ESEA client...
Client will never be made for Linux

"ESEA is a service appealing primarily to competitive players (or minimally, players who care about not playing with cheaters) and attempting to support a variety of rare configurations makes it significantly more difficult to enforce a fair and balanced gameplay environment. On that note linux will not be supported any time soon."

This is a bullshit answer for just not wanting to put in the little bit of extra work. Its shitty, because it promises no one looking to play in ESEA can switch, which hurts Linux adaptation. If they had a Linux client, I'd actually finally sign up.

Til then, I'll stick to UGC.

#38 The response... in TF2 General Discussion
BLoodSireWhat was comically a dick move has now been comically overblown. It reads out on the forum like some big scandal and really it was just a snowballing of poorly made decisions by many groups of people. There are four things we need to keep in mind. I'll list them in order of importance.

1) The charity event is a fantastic thing with a chance to help kids in need (which is great enough) but also a chance to gain exposure for our game. It must not be diminished in any way.

2) My name is still invite blue and not pink, this is probably really embarrassing for someone somewhere.

3) All casts are free exposure for our game. Those who care about the game, players/casters should never strive to give anything but 110% in order to make us all look good. Esports become a joke when nerds start yelling at eachother over the internet. Esports also become a joke when it loses its competitive tension. A casted game should never suffer either.

4) Really, pink looks good on me, I have the light eyes for it.

Tonight, a wish came true.

Lil_NathanSo - from someone who has never run Linux before - HOW I GETZ DA PENGUINZ PLOX?

Run Linux.

www.linuxmint.com - Linux Mint 14, what I use, and I personally really like. Ubuntu at its core with a lot of polish.
www.ubuntu.com - Ubuntu, which Valve offically supports. I'm not a fan of its UI personally. Ran it for awhile before moving to Mint.

Theres also Fedora, OpenSUSE, Arch Linux, etc etc but Steam doesn't "offically" support them yet, and would need some small tweaking to work, plus I have no experience with them.

Those are good starting points for beginners, other distros tend to be a bit more advanced. (Debian, Gentoo, Slackware, Arch....)

Update just hit!

I got my Tux. He goes on your back like a canteen, sits next to it in fact. It has three styles: Normal, which has been shown, Demo, which gives him an eyepatch, and Pyro, which gives him the Pyros mask and penguin versions of his boots.

Also, its adorable.

salsar4ptureWILDFIREawesome! but i doubt it will become the new buds...it's easy to run ubuntu within windows so a lot of people will get this.
I've seen a lot of people talking about using a virtual machine to open TF2, but most of them fail to realize TF2 needs an actual graphics accelerator to run...and VMs don't offer that (as far as I know). You'll get a Linux distro of choice, get a VM, it'll boot up fine, it'll install steam, but when you try to open TF2....it just won't.

could you open TF2 in text mode?

Not when I tried last time, before just outright installing Linux Mint. Even in text mode it requires proper GPU drivers.

There might be a work around, but honestly it would be easier to just install Linux.

#2 What other games do you play/follow? in Off Topic

I follow SC2 once in awhile when its not just koreans playing. Some people say its racist, but seeing koreans win everything isn't entertaining for me, I can't connect with them and they may as well just be robots. There are some exceptions (MC comes to mind), but in general its pretty bleh.

I follow CS:GO when I can, because before TF2 took my heart, it belonged to CS, so I'll always have a soft spot.

Also the FGC because HYPE.

Edit: ALSO SPEEDRUNS
